During the April 2020 lockdown, British online retailer Path Plants experienced a 500% increase in sales. Stuck at home, people looked for a new hobby, one that could relieve stress and, especially for city-dwellers, provide a connection to nature. In fact, Millennials have been spearheading the popularity of houseplants for the past decade. The US National Gardening Association found a 50% surge in sales between 2016 and 2019. In the UK, the Royal Horticultural Society reported a 50% increase in 2018 alone.  Urbanization, coupled with the proliferation of “plantfluencer” social media accounts, partly explains the houseplant boom among Millennials and Generation Z. For wellness-minded age cohorts, indoor green spaces provide a partial solution to the reality of living in small spaces in compact areas. Green and similar colors of foliage can breathe life into an otherwise lifeless (even suffocating) space.  In addition, for those delaying starting families due to career prioritization and financial insecurity, becoming a “plant parent” offers a more convenient outlet for the human need to nurture. Watching and nurturing the growth of a plant can be immensely satisfying, and similarly to having an actual pet, can simulate a quasi-experience [1] of parenthood. More generally, houseplants can aid relaxation — caring for a plant can be a form of self-care [2], offering a welcome respite from daily anxieties and creating a routine in times of uncertainty. They allow us to take a moment away from our screens and feel close to nature, even in the middle of a city or an apartment block.  All in all, houseplants can have significant mental health benefits. Thus, perhaps it is unsurprising that people turned to them during the pandemic.  A May 2020 study of more than 4,200 people in various countries circulated on social media sites found that houseplants brought emotional benefits to 74% of participants during COVID-19 lockdowns. The South Korean government even went so far as to distribute 2,000 “plant pet kits” in June 2020, specifically to alleviate the mental strain of isolation. Of course, owning a houseplant isn’t for everyone, and in some instances, keeping one alive can actually be a cause of stress rather than relaxation. Trying in vain to imitate the urban “jungles” presented splendidly on Instagram might be buying into a fad rather than making a meaningful addition to one’s home. As countries move into a post-pandemic era and people return to their busy lives, will we still have time to indulge our green thumbs? [3] Will the sanctuary provided by houseplants become more important and needed than ever?

2020년 4월 코로나로 인한 외출제한기간 동안, 실내용 화초를 판매하는 영국의 온라인 소매업체 패스 플랜츠는 매출이 500퍼센트나 올랐습니다. 집 밖으로 나갈 수 없게 된 사람들이 스트레스를 덜어주고 특히 도시인들에겐 자연을 느낄 수 있게 해주는 새로운 취미를 찾았기 때문입니다.  사실 밀레니얼 세대는 지난 10년 동안 화초 가꾸기 열풍을 주도한 세대였습니다. 미국 국립 정원가꾸기 협회에서는 2016년과 2019년 사이 매출이 50퍼센트 증가했다고 발표했고 영국 왕립원예협회는 2018년에만 50%의 증가를 보고했습니다.  도시화는, 사회관계망의 "플랜트플루엔서"들의 증가와 함께 밀레니얼과 Z세대의 실내화초 기르기 유행을 불러일으킨 원인의 일부로 볼 수 있습니다. 심신 전반의 건강과 안녕에 신경을 쓰는 사람들에게 실내의 녹색공간은 답답하고 좁은 공간 속에서 살 수밖에 없는 현실에 대해 부분적으로나마 해결책을 제공합니다. 녹색이나 그와 유사한 색의 식물들은 생명력이 없는(심지어 숨이 막힐 듯한) 공간에 생명력을 불어넣어주기도 합니다.  또한 커리어를 우선시하거나 재정적 불안정을 이유로 가족을 이루는 것을 미루고 있는 사람들에게, "식물의 부모"가 되는 것은 인간의 양육 욕구를 충족시켜주는 편리한 창구가 되기도 합니다. 식물을 돌보고 기르면서 관찰하는 것은 충족감을 주고 반려동물을 키우는 것과 마찬가지로 “유사 부모 체험”을 하게 해줍니다. 뿐만 아니라 화초는 긴장해소에 도움이 될 수 있습니다. 식물을 돌보는 것은 자기 돌봄의 한 형태로서, 일상의 걱정으로부터 벗어나 반가운 휴식의 기회를 주고 불확실한 시대에 규칙적으로 할 일을 제공해줍니다. 도시 한복판이나 건물 안에 있더라도 전자기기 화면에서 잠시 벗어나 자연을 가깝게 느낄 수 있게 해줍니다.  전반적으로 화초 키우기는 정신 건강상의 이점이 있습니다. 이를 생각해보면 사람들이 코로나 사태 동안 화초 키우기 시작한 것은 놀랄 일이 아닙니다.  4,200명이 넘는 여러 나라 사람들을 대상으로 2020년 5월에 실시한 연구에 따르면 코로나 기간 동안 화초를 기른 것은 참여자 74%에게 정서적 혜택을 가져다준 것으로 나타났습니다. 한국 정부는 특히 고립감이라는 정신적 부담을 완화하기 위해 2020년 6월에 2천 개의 "반려식물 키트"를 국민들에게 배포하기도 했습니다. 물론 화초를 기르는 것이 모두에게 맞는 것은 아니라서 어떤 경우에는 화초를 죽이지 않으려고 신경쓰는 것이 오히려 스트레스의 원인이 될 수도 있습니다. 인스타그램에 멋지게 나와 있는 “도시속 정글"을 흉내내려고 부질없이 노력하는 것은 내 생활에 어떤 의미 있는 것을 보태는 것이 아니라 한때의 유행을 좇는 것에 그칠 수 있습니다. 전세계 국가들이 코로나 이후 시대로 접어들고 사람들이 바쁜 일상으로 되돌아가고 있는 지금, 우리는 계속 공들여 실내 화초를 가꾸고 돌볼 시간적 여유가 있을까요? 혹은 집안의 식물들이 제공해주었던 우리의 안전지대가 더욱 중요하고 더욱 필요하게 될까요?
