What do you think is the most exciting thing about space exploration?

Space is often referred to as “the final frontier.” What do you think about this statement? Are humans destined to explore space?

Private companies like SpaceX have offered incredibly exclusive commercial tickets for space travel, many purchased by the world’s billionaires. Would you be interested in going to Space if you had the money? Why or why not?

In the 1960s and 1970s several countries competed to put humans on the moon during the International Space Race. Do you believe international competition is a positive or negative component for scientific discovery?

Many would argue that international cooperation is essential for scientific discovery. More recently, private companies like SpaceX are becoming involved in space exploration. What do you think about the privatization and commercialization of space exploration? What are the pros and cons?

In May 2021, a Chinese spacecraft touched down on Mars, the Red Planet. China’s mission to Mars, called Tianwen-1, left earth last July, timed to land on Mars during a window when Mars and the Earth were orbiting closest to each other. One of the goals of the mission is to further understand the distribution of ice in a region that was explored in 2016 by NASA, America’s space agency.  Other international collaborators also have a stake in the Chinese mission, including the European State Agency, Argentina, France, and Austria. Before the landing of the Chinese rover, Zhurong, only NASA had successfully touched down on Mars, most recently with their rover Perseverance arriving in February of 2021. Many believe that the Chinese rover marks the beginning of a new era of international competition in space.  In fact, the exploration of Mars faces significant challenges and requires immense engineering feats [1], underscoring the reason why only two countries had successfully managed a Mars landing. When a spacecraft enters the Martian atmosphere, it only has seven minutes to deaccelerate to a speed that is safe for landing. The thin atmosphere makes this massive slowdown extremely difficult and a variety of technologies like heat shields, parachutes, and other advanced landing mechanisms must be deployed in order to produce success.  Additionally, there is an 11-minute communication delay between Mars and Earth, so all landing instructions must be autonomous and pre-programmed, adding another layer of complication. Due to these challenges, only about 50% of attempts to land on Mars by NASA have been successful. The recent landing of NASA’s Perseverance was the most successful landing yet, as the rover was equipped with advanced technology designed to search for signs of ancient microbial life on Mars. The successful landings orchestrated [2] by China and the US are thought to be important precursors to an exciting time for space exploration. For decades, governments, as well as private corporations like SpaceX, have participated in the global race to space. For example, NASA’s lunar exploration plan, Artemis, calls for sending the first woman and the next man to the Moon by 2024 with hopes of renewing American interest in space exploration.  If successful, this would be the first manned Moon landing since 1972. In 2020, a record $8.9B was invested in space companies, and SpaceX alone was recently awarded a $2.9B contract to use its spaceship, Starship. According to SpaceX’s founder Elon Musk, this spaceship will be ready to fly by 2023. Starship spacecraft would be one of the largest and most advanced to fly humans into space. Space exploration, including travel to Mars, may be the next trillion-dollar industry.
