Earlier this year, Dubai chocolate became a huge trend on social media. Now, Swedish candies have taken over as the next viral [1] dessert. These colorful, chewy treats come in many shapes and flavors and are essentially gummies. ASMR videos of influencers enjoying the chewy sounds have made people around the world even more curious about them.
When the trend began in summer, Swedish candies were hard to find, and their price skyrocketed [2]. While demand increased, Swedish candy factories went on their traditional six-week summer break, which is required by the law. This caused a candy shortage, leaving not only foreigners but also Swedes struggling to get their hands on the popular treats. Some even said that this was putting Sweden’s “lördagsgodis” culture at risk.
What is Lördagsgodis?
Lördagsgodis means “Saturday(lördag) candy(godis)” in Swedish. This tradition encourages Swedes to eat candy only on Saturdays. It began in the 1950s when the Swedish government promoted eating sweets just once a week to prevent tooth decay. Since then, buying a bag of pick-and-mix candy every Saturday has become a cherished [3] routine in Sweden.
