If you’re an HR professional, then you no doubt are already intimately familiar with the intricacies [1] of the onboarding and offboarding process as it pertains to employees in your corporation. That said, there are some things about each part of the process that are learned with time; for onboarding, we’ve included a few proven tips and tricks to maximize efficiency in the process.
The first trick to keep in mind for onboarding is simply that a process is important. Having a series of steps that new employees complete upon joining the company will help to ensure that the employee has time to be welcomed to both the company and the company culture. Try to design the process with some diverse forms of engagement [2], so that employees don’t have to spend extended periods of time filling out forms. Once the “process” is finalized, ensure that it remains the same for all employees.
On the topic of company culture, it’s important to design an onboarding experience that helps an employee integrate with company culture. Keep in mind that every firm has its own culture, so if yours is particularly unique, it might be helpful to create some programs to guide employees into the new culture. Moreover, if there’s specific corporate jargon [3] that your team or company uses, providing a glossary [4] of definitions might constitute an essential part of the onboarding process.
Onboarding is an essential time for new employees. Countless studies show that manager engagement during the process of onboarding helps with employee retention [5]. That said, where possible, ensure that a new employee’s manager has opportunities to engage with an employee during the course of onboarding.
Armed with the aforementioned tips and tricks, you’ll be ready to welcome an employee into your company in no time at all. Ideally, you’ll build an even more wonderful experience for newcomers, too.
