As many wearables are kept on by users close to full time, removed only for charging, they provide unique insight into heart and other health trends previously difficult to observe with traditional medical equipment. Beyond supporting users in their fitness-related goals, wearables have the potential to provide health providers and insurance providers with valuable information on a user’s habits. For example, some insurance providers allow users to connect their wearable device with their profiles to provide discounts and incentives for completing fitness goals. Likewise, although insurance providers now allow users to opt-in to certain initiatives, it’s not hard to imagine a slippery slope whereby users are required to opt-in to insurance-related tracking as a requirement for coverage.  The wearable technology industry is a rapidly growing market, estimated to reach a value of 380 billion US dollars by 2028.
