Airports are the first thing you see upon arriving in a new country, and the last thing you see before departing. Those who are transferring between flights, however, might have only a few golden hours to explore this foreign country by way of its airport, a land that both embodies the nation and serves an important purpose for those only passing by.  In <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The Terminal, a 2004 comedy-drama, Victor Navorski, a European tourist, ends up trapped in JFK as a result of complex geopolitical issues, leaving him<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> stranded [1] in a foreign airport, in a foreign country, with little language skills.  Navorski navigates the new culture surprisingly well, quickly adapting to life at the airport. He learns bits and pieces by way of the bookstore at the airport, and strings together new phrases from the airport televisions. He makes money, first by returning the luggage carts to their carousel, and then eventually through a stroke of luck when airport design crewmembers notice his artistic skills. When money gets tight, he creates little ketchup and mayo sandwiches out of the free saltines available in the food court. As he lives out his life in this wing of JFK, he makes friends with a couple of the employees. One of them is named Gupta, a janitor with a mysterious life. Gupta enjoys watching passengers slip and fall on wet floors, and is also close to Enrique. Enrique, a food service employee, befriends Navorski, and begins providing him with food in exchange for his serving as a <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">wingman [2]. Navorski eventually asks out Enrique’s crush, Dolores, on his behalf. Navorski is able to do so because Dolores is the officer responsible for handling Navorski’s application to enter the US.  The story becomes even more complex and exciting when Navorski meets and eventually falls for a flight attendant, Amelia, who teaches him a bit about both English and the complexities of American love.  Although Navorski knows that the current geopolitical climate in his country makes it nearly impossible for him to leave the terminal in the near future, he applies again and again, waiting hours in line to hand Dolores his application, which she soon learns to deny immediately. Dolores questions Navorski, one day, inquiring on why he spends a couple of hours in line each day when he already knows the outcome of his application. Navorski’s response captures the subtle beauty the story plays with Navorski’s learning of language and all the wonderful implications of this story for which this review will not do justice—he says: “You have two stamps. One red, one green. So, I have chance go New York, fifty-fifty.”
