They come in all sorts of green, from the green of traffic lights, all the way to the dull green of a depressed watermelon. Most of us, by late adulthood, will have become familiar with the vast and varied shades of avocado. Avocados have shaped history as we know it, and they will continue to grow alongside humanity’s ever-voracious appetite. But, what exactly makes avocado so valuable for human consumption? The answer is manifold [1], though the health benefits of avocado set it apart from any other fat-filled fruit.  Avocados are a large part of vegetarian and vegan diets. Its creamy and fatty tasting meat at optimal ripeness serves as a convincing dairy substitute. Moreover, relative to its dairy counterparts, avocado has no cholesterol, no lactose, no saturated fats, and is proven to lower blood sugar! Indeed, although avocados are high in fat, they’re monounsaturated fats, which actually have the potential to lower risks of heart disease and sustain blood glucose levels. A recent study conducted by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign also related the daily consumption of avocados to reduced visceral belly fat in women.  Beyond serving as a dairy substitute, however, avocados are also incredibly versatile. When made into a guacamole, avocado pairs well with tacos and rice bowls, adding a rich consistency to a given dish. In sandwiches, avocado slices make a delightful topping, and avocado mash could even serve as a healthier, cholesterol-free substitute for mayonnaise. Finally, blended into a drink, the avocado serves as a thickener, creating a well-balanced post-workout shake when combined with sweet fruits like pineapple and banana.  Despite being an incredible, heart-healthy option, there is such a thing as “too much avocado.” Avocados tend to be calorically dense, and so overeating while on a diet has the potential to contribute to weight gain. Additionally, avocados contain a type of carbohydrate that is difficult for some parts of the population to digest; so some might find that decreasing avocado consumption helps with digestive challenges. In fact, daily avocado consumption recommended by DailyMail nutritionist Lakatos-Shames is a mere one-fifth. One avocado might last a self-disciplined individual an entire work-week.  One might contemplate whether such an austere avocado regimen will benefit humans and the planet. Perhaps we are in the midst of a cultural craze for avocados, a passing fancy, indulging in its richness at brunch while turning a blind eye to bigger issues. But avocados are too magical to be a mere symbol of vanity—it melts in your mouth, coddling [2] your tongue and making your day brighter. In the words of one avocado enthusiast, "It pairs well with sushi. What more is there to say?"

그것들은 초록 신호등 색부터 다 시들어버린 수박의 칙칙한 녹색까지 매우 다양한 초록색을 입고 있습니다. 성숙한 어른이 될 때쯤의 우리는 대부분 아보카도의 광범위하고 다양한 색조에 익숙해지게 됩니다. 아보카도는 인간에게 많은 중대한 영향을 미쳐왔고, 인류의 왕성한 식욕과 함께 계속 성장할 것이라는 것을 말입니다. 하지만 먹거리로서 아보카도의 이점은 정확히 무엇일까요? 아보카도를 다른 지방이 많은 과일들과 구분 짓는 건강상의 장점 외에도 이 질문에 대한 답은 더 다양합니다.  아보카도는 채식 위주 식단 그리고 완전 채식주의 식단에서 상당한 부분을 차지합니다. 가장 알맞게 익은 상태의 부드럽고 기름진 과육은 유제품 대신 먹기에 아주 적합합니다. 게다가 유제품과 비교했을 때 아보카도는 콜레스테롤, 젖당, 포화 지방이 없고 혈당을 낮추는 역할을 하는 것으로 증명되습니다! 실제로 아보카도는 지방 함량이 높지만, 그 지방은 심장병의 위험을 낮추고 혈당 수치를 유지할 수 있게 해주는 단일불포화 지방입니다. 어바나-샴페인에 있는 일리노이 대학교가 진행한 최근 연구에 따르면 아보카도를 매일 섭취하는 것은 여성의 뱃살 감소에 영향을 준다고 합니다. 하지만 아보카도는 유제품 대신 쓰이는 것 외에도 믿기 어려울 만큼 다양하게 활용됩니다. 과카몰리로 만들어지면 아보카도는 타코와 라이스볼과 잘 어우러져 음식에 진하고 부드러운 느낌을 더합니다. 샌드위치에는 아보카도를 썰어서 넣어도 좋고 으깨서 사용하면 건강하고 콜레스테롤이 없는 마요네즈 대체품이 됩니다. 마지막으로 음료를 만들 때 아보카도를 파인애플, 바나나와 같이 단 과일과 섞으면 음료를 더 걸쭉하게 만들어서 운동 후 마실 수 있는 영양 균형이 잘 잡힌 쉐이크가 됩니다.  아보카도가 믿기 어려우리만큼 심장 건강에 좋은 선택지임에도 불구하고, ‘아보카도 과섭취’라는 것이 문제가 되기도 합니다. 아보카도는 칼로리가 높아서, 다이어트 중 너무 많이 먹으면 체중 증가로 이어질 가능성이 있습니다. 또한 아보카도는 어떤 체질의 사람들이 소화하기 어려운 종류의 탄수화물을 포함하고 있습니다. 그런 사람들은 아보카도의 섭취를 줄이는 것이 소화에 도움이 될 수 있습니다. 사실 “데일리메일”의 영양학자 라카토즈-쉐임즈가 권장하는 일일 아보카도 섭취량은 하나가 아니라 5분의 1에 불과합니다. 절제력이 있는 사람에겐 아보카도 하나가 일주일 내내 먹을 수 있는 양이라는 겁니다. 이런 엄격한 아보카도 섭취량 조절이 인간과 지구에 득이 될 것인지도 생각해 볼 만합니다. 어쩌면 우리는 지금 아보카도에 대한 문화적 열풍에 빠져 있는지도 모릅니다. 순간적인 허영, 브런치를 먹을 때 그 풍부한 맛에 빠져 더 중한 문제에 대해 눈을 돌리고 있는지도 모릅니다. 하지만 아보카도는 단순한 허영심의 상징이기엔 너무도 놀라운 음식입니다. 입안에서 녹아내리고 혀를 부드럽게 감싸며 더 기분 좋은 하루를 만들어줍니다. 한 아보카도 마니아는 말했습니다. "아보카도는 초밥과 잘 어울립니다. 그 이상 더 말할 게 있나요?"
