Writing a law school personal statement can be daunting, especially if you’re unclear about what admissions officers are looking for. A strong personal statement, alongside an impressive resume, can increase the chances of admission–so the stakes are high.  A good personal statement should implicitly answer the question of why you want to go to law school and ultimately practice law. Emphasis here on the word “implicitly”: use the narrative technique of showing rather than telling. Let the reader infer, rather than explicitly stating you have “a passion for law” without providing substantive evidence to support your claim; many law school admissions officers are lawyers themselves who might not react well to unsubstantiated claims!  Equally important is to write in your authentic voice. Make it personal. One way to do this is to identify a unique aspect of yourself that you want admissions officers to know. You may expand on a bullet point on your resume, narrating an episode or a series of episodes. In my case, I wanted admissions officers to know about my experience as a classically trained pianist, which didn’t show on my resume. I drew parallels between [1] music and language, using descriptors that indirectly highlighted qualities that people associate with a successful lawyer (analytical, resilient, and pragmatic).  In the same vein, law school admissions essays, including the personal statement and “why school x” (e.g. Why Yale Law) essay, should be about you, the applicant, not about other people in your life, the company you work for, or the school to which you’re applying. A common mistake happens when an applicant writes an origin story, detailing their parents’ lives, unwittingly [2] making others the protagonists of their story. Or, an applicant will try to impress the reader by writing paragraphs about the achievements of their employer, overshadowing their own work. Enumerating impressive facts about a school in a “why school x” essay, turning the essay into a school advertisement, won’t do much.   Think of writing essays as becoming your own advocate, representing yourself in good faith. You should tell an engaging story, but this story should be based on facts rather than speculations, and it should be framed in a way that sheds a favorable light on you. Admissions officers read hundreds of thousands of applications that are impressive purely based on hard data, academic achievements, and work experience. Show them that you’re more than just your numbers and qualifications.
