Many of you who are in middle or high school have to read books. I don’t mean textbooks like for maths or grammar classes. I mean the classic stories -- the novels that you are told to read. Students often hate that they have to read books for class, and many don’t like reading at all because of that. Although your teachers and parents have probably emphasized the importance of reading, does that really get you to read more? Chances are it doesn’t. And if you’re one of the few people to like reading for fun, chances are you still hate the books in school. I used to hate reading in general and never actually read any of the books in middle school. During class, I would just take notes of the interpretation our teacher gave us and memorize them for exams to get a good grade. At home, I never really read much apart from manga and video game dialogues. I had just decided that books simply weren’t for me. Then I got into high school, and we got assigned our reading for the first semester. The school didn’t have any copies of the book, and my parents didn’t want to pay for it; so I had to buy it myself. I wasn’t really interested in it but since I had already spent my own pocket money, I thought I might as well give it a go [1]. The book was a classic story -- one about a young university student who starts working part-time for an old archive keeper who later turns out to be a wizard. This wizard has three snake daughters (as one does), of whom the student falls in love with one. It was an escapist [2] story in which the protagonist was drawn between the boring life of the real world with all its responsibilities on the one hand and the exciting fantasy of the wizard’s magic world where adventure, love, and excitement awaited. The story got me hooked immediately. I read the whole book within a week, even before the semester started. I completely forgot that I was reading for school; I was just reading because this was the first time that a book’s story evoked [3] the level of excitement known to me from video games. I started watching YouTube videos about the book, with people offering alternative interpretations to the story and recommending similar books. I read those as well -- some I loved, some I didn’t. But I finally understood that it wasn’t that books weren’t for me. I just wasn’t given the right books up to this point. Books are just a means to tell stories. As humans, we are naturally drawn to stories. I don’t believe that there’s a single person in the world who doesn’t like stories; we just hate bad ones. However, the mindset with which we approach stories or the context in which they’re presented to us matters. And being tested on your understanding of a story can even make the best movie, video game, or comic boring and unappealing. For all of you who hate to read, try to focus on the story and your own experience. Ignore what your teachers and parents have told you. And give every book a chance. If it turns out to be boring, that’s OK. Close it and look for another one, a more interesting one. Think about the stories you love from other media and look for similar ones in books.

중학교나 고등학교에 다니는 많은 학생들은 책을 읽어야 합니다. 수학이나 문법책 같은 교과서를 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 고전적인 이야기책-수업시간에 읽으라고 하는 소설들 말입니다. 학생들은 종종 수업을 위해 책을 읽어야 하는 것을 싫어하고 그 때문에 많은 사람들이 독서를 좋아하지 않습니다. 선생님과 부모님은 아마도 독서의 중요성을 강조했겠지만 그래서 정말로 여러분은 책을 더 많이 읽게 되었나요? 그렇지 않을겁니다. 그리고 여러분이 독서를 좋아하는 몇 안 되는 사람 중 하나라고 해도 여전히 학교에서 책을 읽으라고 하는 것을 싫어할 수 있습니다. 저는 평소에 책읽기를 싫어했고 중학교때는 책을 한 권도 읽지 않았습니다. 수업시간에 선생님이 해석해주신 내용을 메모해두었다가 시험에서 좋은 점수를 위해 그것들을 외우고는 했습니다. 집에서는 만화와 비디오 게임 대화 외에는 책을 거의 읽지 않았습니다. 책은 그저 나를 위한 것이 아니라는 결론을 내렸습니다. 그러다가 저는 고등학교에 들어갔고 첫학기에 읽기 과제를 받았습니다. 그 책은 학교에 비치되어 있지 않았고 부모님도 사주기를 원하지 않았기 때문에, 제가 직접 사야 했습니다. 그 책에 별로 흥미를 느끼지는 않았지만, 기왕 내 용돈을 써서 샀으니 한번 읽어보자고 생각하게 되었습니다. 그건 전형적인 이야기책이었습니다. 오래된 고문서 보관소에서 시간제로 일하게 된 젊은 대학생의 이야기인데, 나중에 보관소를 맡아 관리하는 사람은 마법사로 밝혀집니다. 이 마법사에게는 세 명의 뱀 딸이 있는데, 주인공은 딸 중 하나와 사랑에 빠집니다. 해야 할 일이 많은 현실 세계의 지루한 삶과 모험과 사랑, 흥분이 기다리고 있는 마법세계라는 흥미진진한 판타지 사이를 오가는 주인공을 그린 현실도피적인 이야기였습니다. 저는 즉시 그 이야기에 빠져들었습니다. 학기가 시작하기도 전 일주일 만에 책을 다 읽었습니다. 저는 제가 수업을 위해 이 책을 읽고 있다는 것을 완전히 잊었습니다. 책속의 이야기가 비디오 게임만큼 흥미를 불러일으킨 것은 그때가 처음이었기 때문에, 저는 마냥 읽고 있었습니다. 저는이 책에 대한 유튜브 영상을 보기 시작했고, 사람들은 이 이야기에 대한 다른 해석들을 제시하거나 비슷한 책을 추천하기도 했습니다. 저는 그것들도 읽었습니다. 그 중엔 제가 좋아하는 것도 있고 그렇지 않은 것도 있었습니다. 하지만 마침내 저는 제가 책을 싫어하는 것이 아님을 깨달았습니다. 지금까지 제가 좋아할 만한 책을 읽지 못했을 뿐이었습니다. 책은 이야기를 들려주는 수단일 뿐입니다. 인간으로서 우리는 자연스레 이야기에 끌립니다. 저는 이세상에 이야기를 좋아하지 않는 사람은 단 한 명도 없다고 생각합니다. 우리는 단지 나쁜 이야기를 싫어할 뿐입니다. 하지만 우리가 이야기에 접근하는 마음가짐이나 이야기가 우리에게 제시되는 맥락이 중요합니다. 그리고 이야기의 이해 정도를 시험을 통해 평가받는다고 하면 아무리 재미있는 최고의 영화나 비디오게임, 만화도 지루하고 매력없게 만들 수 있습니다. 혹시 책읽기가 싫으시다면 이야기와 여러분 자신의 경험에 집중해보세요. 선생님과 부모님이 여러분에게 하는 말은 신경쓰지 마시구요. 그리고 무슨 책이든 한번 읽어보세요. 지루하다고 생각되면 괜찮습니다. 그 책은 덮고 더 재미있는 다른 책을 찾아보세요. 다른 매체를 통해 접한 이야기 중 여러분이 좋아하는 이야기를 생각해보고 그와 비슷한 이야기를 가진 책을 찾아보세요.
