Two movies, however, are rather new and don’t come from Disney or a giant franchise. The first movie takes place in 2154, when the Earth is <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">depleted [3] of resources. A military organization, called the Resource Development Administration (RDA), wants to mine Pandora of unobtainium, a valuable resource. To do so, a group of humans, led by Marine Jake Sully, hook up to special machines that transform them into human-Na’vi hybrids called avatars. Jake and his team are meant to connect with the Na’vi and gain their trust so the RDA can mine all of Pandora’s unobtainium. Throughout the story, the avatars become very close with the Na’vi, leading them to rebel against the RDA, who <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">resort to [4] violence to take what they want. It is then up to the avatars, Na’vi, and Pandora’s animal kingdom to fight back against the RDA’s high-tech weapons. The destruction of Pandora’s natural resources by the RDA, and the resilience of the Na’vi hits at themes of environmentalism, colonialism, and the diversity of cultures.
