A coworker assigned me this article topic at 8:00 a.m. this morning. Now, it’s 5:00 p.m., the end of the workday. I told them I’d perform robust research on the issue, which was brand new to me and submit the article as soon as possible. While packing up my things to go home, I’m emailing that coworker this draft. You may think that it took me nine hours to research and write this piece, but, in reality, I finished in ten minutes. The rest of the time, I was <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">fake working. We’ve all been in my shoes at some point or another. We don’t have much to do at work, but we have to “work” for a certain amount of hours. So, we do and say things to make it <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">look like we’re working, but all we are actually doing is creating a <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">facade [1]. Today, I did several crosswords, stalked the Google Calendars of several coworkers, and played dozens of games of solitaire. I spent more time acting than performing. I don’t feel good about it, and, chances are, neither do you when you have to fake work. We may feel as if we’re stealing from our companies or aren’t performing to our personal standards. Luckily, there are a few ways to avoid fake work. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Ask for Feedback One reason for fake working is that you feel like your work does not contribute to the company’s overall goals. As such, your work becomes <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">unfulfilling [2], and you lose the motivation to do it. Or, there are other projects to complete, but you don’t know about them because you haven’t asked yet. This suggestion is a reminder of the importance of good communication in the workplace. Having consistent correspondence with your boss or management is key to relating your work to the company’s goals, or ensuring that you are doing all you can to support the workplace.   <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Block out Time Sometimes, we <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">procrastinate [3] or fake work because we haven’t managed our time well. We get distracted or think, “I can do this task later,” only for later to never come. A good way to avoid this fate is to block out your day into uninterrupted work periods, separated by break times. Following a structured routine can help improve focus, and breaks can act as rewards for a good day’s work.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Seek More Work Here, you can either ask for more responsibilities or seek a promotion to a higher-level position that comes with additional benefits and duties. The first option is rather simple—meet with your boss and ask what more you can do, or ask your coworkers if you can <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">take some work <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">off of their plate [4]. The second option is a little more involved, but if you find yourself fake working with some frequency, it could signify that you’ve <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">outgrown [5] your position and are ready for something more challenging.  We are all guilty of fake working at some point or another. Thankfully, there are numerous solutions to this corporate problem that may help reengage you with your work and lead you to more productive days.
