SPA, or the Speaking Proficiency Assessment is an examination designed to measure oral English proficiency in business settings. Unlike other English assessments, the SPA is only available for employees in the corporate world who have been assigned to take it. In South Korea, Hyundai-Kia Motors Group uses the SPA to assess employee performance and make hiring decisions. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The SPA’s Five ModulesThe five modules of the SPA focus on business-related aspects of English proficiency. The test itself is taken face-to-face with an examiner, and totals around ten minutes. The assessment requires the asking of follow-up questions, and note-taking on the part of the examinee is not permitted. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">[Part 1 - Personal Questions] The speaking test begins with a series of personal questions. Sometimes, this section may also require the examinee to discuss opinions on relevant social issues. The applicant will then be asked to summarize the passage in their own words.
