Apple’s software updates are usually <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">unremarkable [1]<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> to users, but something was different this time: the introduction of the App Tracking Transparency (ATT) system.  ATT “gives users the choice of whether they wanna be tracked across apps and websites,” explained Apple’s executive Craig Federighi to the Wall Street Journal.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">ATT is a change to Apple’s privacy policy that requires mobile marketers to ask user consent before they track them. Every iPhone has a unique tracking number-- namely, the Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA). Advertisers can use the IDFA to track user activities between apps, including their clicks, downloads, and purchases. For example, if you buy a tumbler on Amazon Shopping, you might subsequently see relevant ads on your Facebook app. Before iOS 14.5, it was a given that advertisers could access your IDFA for targeted ads. But ATT newly gave users the ability to control whether they want to share this identifier information.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Apple’s update signals a shift in Big Tech. Large tech companies are increasingly conscious about protecting user privacy and data (or advertising about it). Consumers, on the other hand, have grown wary of how companies safeguard and use their data. In fact, just five years ago, digital privacy wasn’t taken very seriously. Even when Mark Zuckerberg testified before Congress after the revelation that Cambridge Analytica harvested user data without consent, the public was busy critiquing senators’ limited understanding of social media. Many questions did seem clueless, to be fair, like when Senator Hatch inquired how Facebook remains profitable without making users pay. Zuck’s simple, “Senator, we run ads,” only made the situation more comical. That said, this is how Zuckerberg wanted the public to view the issue, and we bought into the narrative.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">At first, sharing dog pictures on Instagram seemed innocuous enough to not care. If a hacker gets hold of your poodle’s belly, what would they do about it? An older relative would fret about the risks of using Google Cloud, to which we would reply, “It’s fine, Pa. You’re not Trump-- no one cares about what’s in your drive.” But it is becoming clear that we didn’t know what we were doing by sharing seemingly <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">superfluous [2]<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> data with institutions.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">One way to look at the issue is to consider that data can be amassed to create a profile of a person or a country. Let’s think about how location <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">surveillance [3]<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> works as an example. You probably carry your phone with location services on. Given that your location alone doesn't reveal much about other aspects of your life, this is not a big deal, is it? But when your movement is logged across time, the data is not anonymous anymore. Not many people share the exact same paths you travel daily, including your home and work. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/12/19/opinion/location-tracking-cell-phone.html" style="text-decoration:none;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:underline;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;text-decoration-skip-ink:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">A New York Times opinion column </a><span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">revealed the unnerving reality of location surveillance in 2019: “very minute of every day, everywhere on the planet, dozens of companies-- largely unregulated, little scrutinized-- are logging the movements of tens of millions of people with mobile phones and storing the information in gigantic data files.” <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Think about the threat that can be posed if gigantic files of individual data fall into the wrong hands. Even if your data isn’t stolen, they can be used to manipulate your decisions and actions, <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">encroaching [4]<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> on your privacy. Then it is a good thing that Big Tech is advertising their efforts to give consumers more choice on when and who can access their data.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">This is an approach that says, “Okay, the proper response to massive pooling of data is to give individuals more control over their personal information.” With this control, you have the right to view your content database, and no one is allowed to use or share it without your consent. This approach is reflected in regulations, which is why you get all the pop-ups on apps and websites asking for your consent.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">But having hundreds of more pop-ups begging for your consent doesn’t guarantee your digital privacy. One serious problem with the approach focused on consent is that “<a href="https://techcrunch.com/2019/09/26/privacy-queen-of-human-rights-in-a-digital-world/" style="text-decoration:none;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:underline;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;text-decoration-skip-ink:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">it is utter fiction</a><span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">,” writes Tehilla Shwartz Alshuler on TechCrunch. When we consent to the sharing of our data with third parties, we cannot foresee at the time how our data will be used. Moreover, we are often forced to consent to the broad use of and access to our data in order to use services.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Clearer regulations that define legitimate collection and use of data seem more urgent than ever. At the same time, privacy should be seen as a crucial right in an increasingly digital world.
