According to 2013 statistics, in the US, approximately 1,000 phones are stolen per day, from offices, schools, restaurants, and beyond. This statistic doesn’t encompass the phones that are lost. Only about seven percent of these phones will go on to be re-discovered and returned to their rightful owners-- the rest? The three most common outcomes for lost smartphones are: being stripped for parts, being pawned [1] for money (and then sometimes being stripped for parts), or being shipped outside of the country that it’s taken from and re-used or resold in another destination.  Phones with extensive protective mechanisms (such as Apple’s Activation lock or Google’s factory reset protection) are oftentimes difficult to re-enable and sell as used, and phones that are lost with these features are more likely than not to be returned. However, lost phones protected with activation lock still have some value in the parts market (that is, they have value when taken apart for parts to be sold individually). Therefore, these phones that aren’t returned are most likely either disposed of or taken apart.  If a user doesn’t have time to react to a phone’s theft or loss, the phone might be wiped [2] and then sold to a local pawn shop. Once a phone is wiped, it’s far less likely to be successfully recovered (which is why it’s important to react quickly upon noticing a lost device). Even if by some miracle, you manage to track down your phone, once it’s at a pawn shop, it’s not likely that the owner (unless they’re particularly gracious) will return it to you. Finally, for those who make a living from phone theft, there appears to be an entire underground network for distribution of stolen phones. Phones stolen from the US are sometimes blacklisted by carriers by their unique identification number, called IMEI (meaning that these phones will no longer work on any US network). To get around this, thieves will ship these phones abroad (to places like India or China), where carriers have not blocked the phone’s IMEIs, allowing them to work freely. Ultimately, the best way to avoid having to follow your phone through a nightmarish journey? Keep it on you at all times, keep it in sight, and if the worst happens, make sure to move quickly to alert your carriers and lock it by way of your account.
