Luxury cars really aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. You can get a non-luxury car that does everything you want it to for a fraction of the price of a luxury car. 

A lot of people said this class was a can’t-miss, but in my experience, it wasn’t all that it was cracked up to be.

미래를 위해 어떤 준비를 하고 계신가요?

As you take off your Oculus after a virtual meeting, you hear your robot vacuum start up from across the room. The future we imagined, one complete with robot maids and virtual reality, is rapidly becoming our normal. Once a vision of utopia, we are now grappling with the drastic changes brought forth by overwhelming technological advances. At some point, though, we stop holding our breath for the innovations of tomorrow and wonder: is everything as it was cracked up to be [1]? Chuck Palahniuk, an American freelance journalist and a novelist once said, “When did the future switch from being a promise to being a threat?” How should we prepare for this rapidly changing world? A McKinsey study estimates that with the current level of technological advancement, about 60% of current available jobs can be partially replaced by machines, while less than 5% can be fully replaced. This means that although the transition to automation is happening quickly, much of the decisions surrounding what roles will be replaced by machines are still up to people. With so many jobs under threat, the role of education in preparing students for the real-world must be seriously reconsidered. The underlying question here is to what extent our current model of education helps or hinders students' future career paths. Already, current education models are under scrutiny by the likes of Yuval Nooah Harari, author of the global bestselling book “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind.” Harari estimates that “when our children reach their 40s, 80 to 90 percent of what they learned in school is likely to be useless.” In fact, the use of internet lectures and artificial intelligence tutors will become more common, which will threaten the existence of universities from their foundation–this is not an outrageous suggestion. In their attempt to prepare their next generation for the fast advancing future, the UK, Japan, and some states in the US have mandated coding classes for those aged 5 or older as part of their school curriculum; South Korea followed suit [2] in 2019. We can hardly say adding coding to the curriculum is the sole way to prepare children for a rapidly changing future, but it's clear that the world is attempting to find an answer. The answer for what will sufficiently equip us for the future will not come easily, if ever. However, now that we know something should be done, why not consider how best to approach it?  While there are many frightening predictions of a future defined by machines rather than humans, we are the ones directly responsible for shaping our tomorrow.

가상 회의가 끝난 후 오큘러스를 벗으면, 방 저쪽에서 로봇 청소기가 작동하는 소리가 들립니다. 로봇 가정부와 가상현실에 이르기까지 우리가 상상했던 미래가 빠르게 우리의 일상이 되어가고 있습니다. 한때는 그저 상상하던 이상향이였지만, 이제 압도적인 기술 발전이 가져다준 급격한 변화 앞에서 우리는 고민하고 있습니다. 어느 순간부터인가 우리는 내일의 혁신을 숨죽여 기다리지 않게 되었습니다. 모든 것이 과연 원래 예상했던대로 되고 있는 걸까요? 미국의 프리랜스 저널리스트이자 소설가인 척 팔라뉴크는 이렇게 말했습니다. “언제 미래가 약속에서 위협으로 바뀐 것일까요?” 이렇게 급변하는 세상에 우리는 어떻게 준비해야 할까요? 맥킨지 연구에 따르면 현재의 기술 발전 수준을 볼 때 현재 세상에 있는 직업의 약 60퍼센트가 부분적으로 기계에 의해 대체될 수 있으며, 5퍼센트 미만의 직업은 완전히 대체될 것으로 추정됩니다. 이것은 비록 자동화로의 전환이 빠르게 진행되고 있지만 기계가 어떤 역할을 대체할 것인지에 대한 많은 결정은 여전히 사람에게 달려 있음을 의미합니다. 많은 직업이 위협받고 있는 상황에서, 학생들을 현실 세계에 맞게 준비시키는 데 교육의 역할은 심각하게 재고되어야 합니다. 여기서 근본적인 질문은, 우리의 현재 교육 모델이 학생들의 미래 진로에 어느 정도 도움이 되느냐 혹은 방해가 되느냐 하는 것입니다. 이미 현재의 교육 모델은 세계적인 베스트셀러 "사피엔스: 유인원에서 사이보그까지"의 작가인 유발 누아 하라리와 같은 사람들에 의해 시험대에 올라 있습니다. 하라리는 "우리 아이들이 40대가 되면 학교에서 배운 것의 80~90퍼센트가 무용지물이 될 가능성이 높다"고 예측했습니다. 실제로 인터넷 강의와 인공지능 교사의 사용이 더 일반화될 것이고, 그러면 대학의 존립은 그 근본부터 위협을 받을 것입니다. 이것은 얼토당토않은 가정이 아닙니다. 빠르게 진보하는 미래에 차세대를 잘 준비시키려는 시도로, 영국, 일본 및 미국의 일부 주에서는 학교 교과과정의 일부로 5세 이상 학생들의 코딩 수업을 의무화했습니다. 한국도 2019년 뒤따라 같은 정책을 취했습니다. 코딩을 교과과정에 추가하는 것이 아이들을 급변하는 미래에 준비시키는 유일한 방법이라고 말할 수는 없지만 세계가 답을 찾으려고 시도하는 중임은 분명합니다. 어떻게 해야 미래에 대한 만반의 준비를 할 수 있는지에 대한 답을 찾기는 쉽지 않을 것입니다. 하지만 이제 무언가를 해야 한다는 것은 알았으니 거기에 어떻게 접근하는 것이 가장 좋은지 생각해 보는 것은 어떨까요? 인간이 아닌 기계가 정의하는 미래에 대한 두려운 예측이 많이 있지만 우리의 내일을 만드는 직접적인 책임은 바로 우리 자신에게 있습니다.
