Cupid and Psyche

Often, when one imagines Valentine’s Day, they can’t help but see an image of Cupid, a naked baby holding a bow and arrows of love. Rumor has it, those who are struck by Cupid’s arrow are destined to fall in love, but the story of Cupid is one that’s often neglected. You see, Cupid wasn’t always a baby. He wasn’t even always associated with Valentine’s Day. In one account of Cupid’s lineage, he is the son of Venus, the goddess of Beauty. Legend has it that he was sent to earth by his mother who got jealous of a beautiful mortal, Psyche. Cupid went on his mission, armed with [1] arrows that cause people to fall wildly in love with the first thing they see, to strike Psyche so that she might fall in love with a hideous creature. Clumsy as he was, Cupid scratched himself on his arrow, and set eyes on [2] Psyche.  As the story goes, Cupid fell wildly in love with Psyche, and left without doing what he was told to do. But no one dared to love Psyche, and she was sent to a mountaintop and then lifted up to a beautiful palace by the west wind, a place Cupid visited every night. Psyche reciprocated Cupid’s love, but a strange condition was that he never allowed her to see his face. Curiosity always gets the best of us mortals, and as such, Psyche one day dared to look at Cupid’s face while he was asleep. Instead of seeing a monster, Psyche saw the most beautiful man, a perfect combination of human and god, and was struck with an attraction unlike anything she’d ever experienced. Cupid was awakened by a drop of oil from the lamp, and having been betrayed by his lover, fled.  Psyche then spent the rest of her mortal life seeking out Cupid. The ending to this story varies: in some iterations, Psyche continues the rest of her life seeking Cupid, never to find him or to love again. In others, the story is a fairytale, in which after going through trial and tribulation [3], the lovers Cupid and Psyche fall in love and live happily ever after.  Over time, during the late 300s BCE, Cupid was transformed from a young man with the powers to manipulate humans into love, into a tiny chubby baby, one that grants love by way of his magic arrow.
