IntroductionIf you find yourself building a rudimentary house late at night out of the wood you collected during the day, you might just be playing a game of Minecraft. (Alternatively, you could be in a terrifying real-life situation.) Born in 2009, which would make it twelve years old today (as of October 2021), Minecraft is a sandbox game created by Swedish developer Markus "Notch" Persson. Its intellectual property rights have since been purchased by Microsoft, and the game has expanded to be playable on most consoles, operating systems, and even iPhone and Android devices. The game originated with two modes, survival and creative, making for a different experience for different kinds of players.  Survival modeSurvival mode entails living out “life” within the blocky world of Minecraft. Players must first find wood, then coal, then eventually create tools with more advanced minerals [1]. The most rudimentary tools are made of wood, and the most efficient and powerful tools are made of diamond. Much of the gameplay in survival mode emulates real life, although there are some meaningful differences. For one, monsters (as we know them in Minecraft) don’t exist in real life. Likewise, Minecraft in survival mode gives players the opportunity to enter a few alternate universes, one called The Nether, a fiery world filled with zombie pigs, and The End, an even more frightening world that looks somewhat like cheese. Getting to the alternate universes in Minecraft survival is no breeze, but it’s rumored that going to The End and defeating the Ender Dragon allows a player to “win” the game. Of course, Minecraft survival could be played on for forever, hypothetically.  Creative modeCreative mode differs from survival mode in that players can fly by default. The point of this mode is not to survive, or to collect, or even to mine. Rather, players have an infinite amount of all blocks available in the game, and the only goal is, as the name implies, to create. Those with artistic inclinations might particularly love this mode, using it to build out entire cities, monsters, statues, and more. In fact, when the pandemic struck in 2020, the American college of UC Berkeley created its campus in Minecraft and hosted graduation virtually there!  In 2016, Minecraft: Education Edition was released. This platform, albeit still relatively new, offers unique opportunities for educators to provide virtual lessons and enact [2] lesson plans for classes by way of the Minecraft world.
