This essay is part of a series on college and college life. In April of 2016, an American high school senior wrote an essay that got her into five out of the eight Ivy League schools, along with Stanford, which at the time had an acceptance rate of less than 5% (it has only steadily declined since). The topic of that essay? Costco.  Costco, in case you haven’t heard of it, is an American multinational corporation of retail stores. Basically, it is a large grocery store that sells lots of common household items (like toilet paper and paper plates) in bulk.  What exactly was it about Costco that got this student into the schools? Or rather, what exactly was it about her work that was so successful? Many students often wonder, if perhaps, they too should pick a grocery store of their choice and attempt to emulate this student’s work. But in fact, students should remember that this essay was successful not because it was about Costco, but rather because it was an authentic expression of this student’s experiences.  The goal of the college essay is to serve as a pure reflection of you — U.S. admissions committees already have a full scope of your intellectual capabilities by way of the scores you submit. Everything else that makes you unique, makes you who you are, is shown in the essay. So, the essay is your opportunity to sell your humanity to someone. A counselor who reads the essay and imagines they want to get to know the student is a successful essay. A successful essay can be about literally anything, as long as it provides the reader with a reflection of a unique moment in your life.  For this American high school senior, that moment was going to Costco, pondering the relationship between a jar of nutella and the philosophy of life: “If there exists a thirty-three ounce of Nutella, do we really have free will?” Take a moment to think.
