With concern growing worldwide about the urgency of the climate crisis, the idea of green startups is gaining serious traction among entrepreneurs. Much like the idea of socially responsible investing (SRI), green startups are a subcategory of green finance. They embrace the notion that a business can be both environmentally sustainable and financially successful.Much green entrepreneurship falls into the broad categories of energy and technology. You’ve probably heard of companies like Tesla, or know about Toyota and Hyundai’s work on hydrogen-powered cars. Likewise, renewable energies like solar and wind power are rapidly becoming popular options for investors. Bloomberg New Energy Finance predicts, for example, that renewable energy will comprise $5.5 trillion worth of investments by 2030, some 65% of the market.However, some entrepreneurs are pursuing more outside-the-box [1] ideas. One especially innovative concept is that of the “circular economy.” In contrast to the traditional “take, make, waste” model of our current economy, the circular economy aims to minimize or even eliminate both the harvesting of new resources and the creation of new waste. The circular economy is based on the old idea that “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure”: every stakeholder in society makes use of someone else’s waste products, while passing on their own waste to be used productively as well. One great example of this economic model is found in the Netherlands. The Dutch city of Rotterdam is home to BlueCity, a startup incubator dedicated to promoting the idea of the circular economy. On their website, they tout the collaboration of Aloha Bar-Restaurant, RotterZwam, and the BlueCity Lab. Coffee grounds from the restaurant are sent to RotterZwam, where they are used as soil to grow mushrooms. The edible parts of these mushrooms are served at Aloha, while the non-edible parts are sent to the BlueCity Lab to be turned into sustainable packaging. This collaboration allows all three businesses to reduce both costs and waste.Another, smaller example is The Rounds. This Philadelphia-based startup was co-founded by Wharton graduates Byungwoo Ko and Alexander Torrey. Their goal is to provide customers with essential household goods and pantry products, all delivered to their doorstep via e-bike, and with an absolute minimum of packaging. Not only is their approach more personal and low-effort for the customer, but The Rounds estimates that its service would save the average customer between 18 and 23 kilos of waste per year. Ko hopes that, if his business is successful, it will “lead to a breakthrough in product development, product usage and hopefully lower consumption, and lower the waste that goes into products.”Of course, the downsides of green entrepreneurship are important to consider as well. One of these is greenwashing — when a company falsely advertises itself as “green” in order to boost profit. Recently, for example, the state of California fined Walmart for misleadingly claiming that its use of plastic was environmentally responsible. Furthermore, some people make a more damning [2] claim about all current growth-based entrepreneurship. In her book Donut Economics, Raworth argues that any economic system predicated [3] on growth cannot be sustainable. That said, it remains to be seen whether green entrepreneurism can be green at all.
