What was your childhood dream? Have your dream jobs maintained their popularity over time? According to a survey of students conducted by the Ministry of Education of South Korea, the most popular childhood dream job over the past decade was to be a teacher. In 2019, athletes took over the top spot, but 2020 was a return to the classroom. Despite all the social concerns over the deteriorating dignity and rights of teachers, there remains significant interest in shaping the minds [1] of the next generation. Results aside, another intriguing point from the survey is that the most desired occupation among elementary students has diversified. Jobs that did not exist in the past, like a YouTube star, a Webtoon creator, and such ranked highly. This phenomenon suggests that the younger generation is more connected to the immediate and, perhaps, distant future labor market than the present generation. We all know that various occupations have come and gone over the centuries. For more than two thousand years prior to the Industrial Revolution, one of the most promising occupations in the West was that of blacksmith–many people chose the surname "Smith" and as a result, the surnames Smith and Schmidt (blacksmith in German) are ubiquitous. Now, that profession has almost entirely disappeared, as have more recent occupations, like telephone operators, typists, and bus attendants. Jobs come into and out of existence all the time, and currently, jobs like app developers and robot trainers are in high demand, even though they were nearly inconceivable just a few decades ago. Some experts predict that the job market will undergo even more dramatic changes over the next 20 years as technology continues to advance at a blistering [2] pace, and machines automate—and create—new occupations. These developments are not only a problem for the next generation, but the current job market as well. Research suggests that 85% of the jobs that will exist in 2030 have yet to appear. If machines start to further replace humans, we will have to find new areas of application for our skills. As the average life expectancy approaches 100, how do you want to spend your days?
