On the 14th of February, lovers across the US and in other places exchange flowers, chocolate boxes, and other more extravagant gifts in the name of St. Valentine. But the history of Valentine’s Day is shrouded in mystery. Though February has long been celebrated as the month of love, there are competing legends about who St. Valentine was and how he came to be associated with the ancient rite that has vestiges of Christian and Roman tradition.  At least three different saints named Valentine or the likes are recognized by the Catholic Church. One legend has it that Valentine was a martyred [1] priest who served during the third century in Rome. At the time, Emperor Claudius II banned the marriage of young men to make better soldiers out of them. Valentine, defying Claudius’ decree [2], secretly performed marriages for young couples. When his illegal performance of matrimony was discovered, he was executed. Another story contends that Saint Valentine of Terni, who was put to death by Cladius as well, is the true namesake of the holiday.  It was not until much later, in the middle ages, that Valentine’s Day became associated with romance. February 14 was commonly believed to be the beginning of birds’ mating season in France and England, strengthening the link between love and Valentine’s Day. In his 1375 poem, the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer wrote, “For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne’s day / Whan every foul cometh ther to choose his mate.”  Fast forward to Victorian England, friends and lovers started exchanging handwritten notes and tokens of endearment. In the 19th century, printed cards substituted handwritten notes due to the improvement of printing technology. Valentine’s Day provided an outlet for expressing romantic feelings when such overt expressions were discouraged. Esther Howland, an artist and a businesswoman known as “the mother of Valentine,” popularized Valentine’s Day greeting cards in America in the 1840s.  Today, the celebration of Valentine’s Day comes with phenomena that are unique to modern times. Restaurants offer (often over-the-top) V-Day special course meals; reserving a table weeks in advance is necessary due to the typically high demand. The holiday is a boon to chocolate manufacturers as well, as orders are filled up by people seeking to express their love in the most typical form. Taxi and Uber drivers are three to five times busier on Valentine’s Day, shuffling around customers from one date spot to another.  Valentine’s Day spread to East Asian countries as well. As with any cultural element that is newly introduced, it has taken a unique form in those places, although not recognized as a public holiday. In South Korea, where being single is perceived as a less ideal state than being in a relationship, singles commiserate [3] by eating black noodles on Valentine’s Day.  An ancient holiday with ambiguous origins, Valentine’s Day continues to change in its meaning and customs to fit contemporary audiences.
