In the cutthroat Kpop world, artists and entertainment companies have often taken <span style="text-indent: 36pt; background-color: transparent; 12pt; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">unorthodox [1] approaches to set them apart from the competition. In October 2020, SM Entertainment (SM), a Korean company dubbed one of the “Big 3s” in the industry, announced the launch of four-member female band Aespa. The twist? The members — Karina, Winter, Giselle, and Ning-Ning — each have a virtual AI version of themselves. “[Aespa will] transcend the boundaries between the ‘real world’ and the ‘virtual world’,”  Soo-man Lee, SM’s chairman is quoted to say. Using AI and VR technology, S00-man hopes to create SMCU (SM Culture Universe), a virtual universe where the virtual counterparts of all of their artists can be <span style="text-indent: 36pt; background-color: transparent; 12pt; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">showcased [2]. Although the experimentation with Aespa shocked many, computer-generated personas are not new in the entertainment industry. Miquela Sousa (otherwise known as Lil Miquela), is a “19-year-old robot living in LA” with three million Instagram followers. There is something about her that makes her feel like a living, breathing human, not a computer-generated profile. She hangs out with real-life artists and wears clothes from real-life streetwear and luxury brands. When photographed in daylight, her body casts a shadow, and most importantly, she talks like an American teen. Her creators invested $125 million to help pave a future for virtual influencers as advertisers and fashion models brands such as Calvin Klein and Prada. K/DA, a Kpop-themed virtual girl group, was unveiled at the 2018 League of Legends (LOL) World Championship. Developed by the Riot Games company to present new LOL characters, the band became the first AI band in all of Kpop history. Established Kpop idols, Miyeon and Soyeon from the girl group (G)I-DLE, and American pop stars Madison Beer and  Jaira Burns provided the voices for K/DA members Ahri, Akali, Evelynn, and Kai’Sa respectively. Their debut single “Pop/Stars,'' on YouTube, gained over 400 million views.  That said, many industry players are open to the idea of introducing AI artists and celebrities. For one thing, human artists might display unpredictable behaviors that could lead to bad publicity. With virtual influencers, businesses can have complete control over their actions. Moreover, virtual stars never get sick or burnt out in performing and interacting with fans, unlike their human counterparts. Industry decision-makers including Soo-man Lee believe that introducing AI has much financial potential. It is predicted, for example, that the global fashion industry will annually invest at least $3.6 billion in AI technology to generate future models. These endeavors do seem promising, but are they harmless? Many commentators seem skeptical. Unlike their human versions, AI avatars can execute everything flawlessly, which may devalue the human members' hard work and talent.  People also worry that celebrities may become further objectified and oversexualized in the entertainment industry with the advent of virtual avatars, especially so for young Kpop idols (some even minors) vulnerable [3] to harsh scrutiny over their appearances. This concern is backed up by the image of Aespa’s AI avatars, computer-generated images with more provocative body features and outfit choices. AI technology has come a long way from its root to its current capabilities, but many fear that this may overshadow those who have spent years perfecting their crafts.
