Put a Positive Spin on Your Social Media Experience

[This is a New York Times article, revised specifically for Ringle audiences.] Some people digitally disappear for good [1], dropping all social media. No doubt you’ve heard people say that they will get a break from their digital lives. On one hand, I can sympathize with this social media hiatus [2] or “detox,” if you will. The current state of the modern world is a billion voices screaming for your attention, and it’s easy to let the most negative ones filter through and bring you down. It can be exhausting, and if your real life is already a struggle, adding digital gloom can be overwhelming.  Take Facebook, for example, and how mind-numbing it can be. The platform is a behemoth with over 1.5 billion daily active users. What was once an innocuous way to share photos with friends and connect with people has become something else entirely. And because Facebook has become such an integral [3] part of modern existence, its quirks become part of the social mores. Jokes about “unfriending” someone, and the political and social ramifications that go with that, are everywhere; and a platform so ingrained for us still shows everything our friends are talking about, whether that be a random social media feud or a superficial comment. Or, scroll through Instagram for a few seconds only to find yourself drifting in the currents of heavily photoshopped pictures that often portray “ideal” body images. No wonder the platform has been accused [4] for contributing to body insecurities.  Well, it doesn’t have to be that way! Through conscious and careful effort, you can avoid unpleasant or discouraging content and turn social media platforms into positive aspects of your life, or at least, neutral. If you know how social media works, you can prevent yourself from being dragged down with the endless streams of detrimental detritus. More importantly, your solution doesn’t have to take the extreme form of dropping all social media. For example, the stealthy regimen of “unfollowing” a friend on Facebook will make your feed quieter. If you unfollow someone, you don't see their posts or conversations, but you are still friends. Besides the nuclear option of dropping FB altogether, this function prevents you from spending too much mental energy on your friends’ altercations with random strangers. Of course, unfollowing will empty your news feed… However, you can selectively follow friends. You’ll also still see posts for any groups you’re in, presuming you still follow them. A similar advice applies to Instagram. Simply don’t follow accounts or hashtags you don’t like.  The tips above are about filtering out what you don’t want to see. But what you show the world is a very different question. We might feel at times like putting on a fake persona in our digital life, which might be another reason to drop social media. I also stopped posting on Instagram at some point because I felt I was portraying a fake version of myself. But here’s the thing: You don’t have to post anything you don’t want to. You don’t have to post at all. There is a pressure to share, of course, but what you share and how much is entirely up to you.  Yet, putting conscious effort into how you use Facebook or Instagram is easier said than done. After all, these platforms are meant to feed into the instant gratification that comes from social approval. In other words, social media does not incentivize emotional maturity or mindfulness; instead, users get their dopamine kick whenever they receive positive feedback (likes). Narcotic drugs or gambling could rule our brain’s reward system in a similar capacity. Thus, being careful or mindful goes against the type of mentality social media platforms are designed to induce.  Let’s pause to ask: if your news feed is empty because you’ve unfollowed your friends, why use FB in the first place?

어떤 사람들은 SNS(*영어로 소셜 미디어)를 모두 그만두고 디지털 세계에서 영영 사라집니다. 여러분은 디지털 삶에서 잠시 벗어나겠다는 사람들에 대해 들어보셨을 겁니다. 한편으로는 이렇게 SNS를 잠시 끊고 디톡스 시간을 갖는 것도 어느정도 이해가 갑니다. 현대 사회에서는 여러분의 관심을 끌기 위해 수십억 명이 비명을 지르고 있고, 이중 가장 부정적인 목소리가 필터를 뚫고 들어와 당신을 힘들게 하곤 합니다. 이러면 지치기 마련이고, 현실이 이미 힘겹다면, 암울한 디지털 경험을 보태는 것은 감당하기 너무 어려운 일일 수 있습니다.  예를 들어 페이스북이 얼마나 정상적인 사고를 마비시킬 수 있는지 보세요. 이 플랫폼은 일일 사용자가 15억 명이 넘는 거대한 기업입니다. 친구들과 사진을 공유하고 사람들과 연결되기 위해 시작했던 무해했던 일이 완전히 다른 것이 되었습니다. 페이스북은 현대 삶에 필수가 되었기 때문에, 그 독특한 행동 패턴이 사회적 관습의 일부로 스며들었습니다. “친구 끊기”를 하겠다는 조크와 그에 따른 정치적, 사회적 파급 효과는 곳곳에서 볼 수 있습니다. 그리고 생활에 깊숙이 스며든 이 플랫폼은 친구들의 모든 글을 다 보여줍니다. 그것이 SNS에서 펼쳐진 설전이든 가벼운 댓글이든 말입니다. 또는 인스타그램을 몇 초 동안 훑어보세요. “이상적인” 몸매를 주로 묘사하는 포토샵이 굉장히 많이 들어간 사진들 속에서 표류하는 자신을 발견하게 될 것입니다. 사람들이 자신의 신체에 대해 불안감을 느끼게 하는 데 이 플랫폼이 기여했다고 비난받는 것도 일리가 있습니다.   그런데, 꼭 이렇지 않아도 됩니다! 세심하게 좀 더 신경을 쓴다면, 불쾌하거나 기분을 다운시키는 콘텐츠를 피할수 있고, SNS가 삶에 긍정적인 것이, 또는 최소한 나쁜 것은 되지 않게 바꿀 수 있습니다. SNS가 어떻게 작동하는지 알면 끊임없이 흘러나오는 해로운 쓰레기에 끌려가는 것을 방지할 수 있습니다. 더 중요한 점은 이런 문제를 해결하기 위해 SNS를 모두 중단하는 극단적인 방법을 선택할 필요가 없다는 것입니다.  예를 들어 페이스북에서 조용히 팔로우를 해제하는 것 여러분의 피드 창을 조용하게 만들어 줄 것입니다. 팔로우를 해제하면 사람들의 게시물이나 대화 내용은 보이지 않지만, 여전히 친구 상태를 유지할 수 있습니다. 페이스북을 다 중단해버리는 극단적 선택 말고도 이러한 기능은 친구와 낯선 사람들과의 언쟁에 너무 많은 정신적인 에너지를 소비하는 것을 방지해 줍니다. 당연히 팔로우하지 않으면 뉴스 함은 비게 되겠지만요. 하지만 선택적으로 친구를 팔로우 할 수 있습니다. 여전히 팔로우하고 있다는 가정하에 자신이 속해있는 그룹의 게시물을 계속 볼 수 있습니다. 이러한 조언은 인스타그램도 마찬가지입니다. 간단하게 마음에 들지 않는 계정이나 해시태그를 팔로우하지 마세요.  위에서 언급한 팁은 보고 싶지 않은 것들을 걸러 내는 방법입니다. 이제 여러분이 세상에 자신을 내보이는 것은 매우 다른 문제입니다. 우리는 가끔 디지털 삶 속에서 진실이 아닌 모습을 보여주고 싶을 때가 있지만, 이것은 SNS를 그만두는 또 다른 이유가 되기도 합니다. 저 또한 언제부턴가 인스타그램에 게시물을 올리지 않게 된 건 제가 저 자신의 가짜 버전을 보여주고 있다는 생각이 들었기 때문입니다. 하지만  중요한 것은, 여러분이 원하지 않는 건 올리지 않아도 된다는 것입니다. 아예 아무것도 게시하지 않아도 되죠. 물론 뭔가를 포스팅 해야 한다는 압박감이 있지만, 무엇을 공유하고 얼마나 공유할지는 전부 여러분에게 달려있습니다.  그러나 페이스북이나 인스타그램을 어떻게 사용할지 의식적인 노력을 기울이는 것은 말처럼 쉽지 않습니다. 결국 이런 플랫폼들은 사회적 인정에서 오는 즉각적인 만족감을 제공하기 위한 것입니다. 다시 말해, SNS는 정서적 성숙함이나 자신의 감정을 돌보는 것을 권장하지 않습니다. 대신, 이용자들은 긍정적인 피드백(좋아요)을 받을 때마다 도파민에서 나오는 쾌감을 느낍니다. 마약이나 도박도 비슷하게 우리 뇌의 보상 체계를 지배할 수 있습니다. 따라서 신중하거나 감정 상태를 점검하는 것은 SNS가 유도하도록 설계된 사고방식과 맞지 않습니다.  이제 잠시 멈추고 질문해 봅시다. 만약 친구를 팔로우하지 않아 소식 창이 비어있다면, 애초에 왜 페이스북을 하겠습니까?
