Patagonia is a renowned outdoor clothing and equipment brand that is committed to being environmentally friendly.  It was Yvon Chouinard who opened the first Patagonia store in 1973. The company has since evolved to become one of the top three brands in the industry, along with The North Face and Columbia Sportswear. Each report sales figures between $800 million and $1 billion.  Profitability is not the brand’s only strength — it is known to give up profits in favor of doing the right thing. Patagonia's mission statement is "to save our home planet" by minimizing “unnecessary harm” to the environment. Having donated a total of $80 million (about 90 billion won) for conservation causes, every year, Patagonia allocates ten percent of its profits or one percent of total sales, whichever is greater, to various environmental organizations. The company gave away about 6 billion won in 2012, 7.8 billion won in 2017, and more than 10 billion won in 2019. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Leave no trace on the rockfaceYvon Chouinard was a climbing enthusiast. Inspired by his love for rock climbing, Yvon became a blacksmith and started producing and selling steel pitons (metal spikes that are driven into the rockface to secure their lines). The product was a commercial success. Subsequently, he founded Chouinard Equipment Ltd., a rock climbing gear company. However, having become aware that his company's steel piton severely damaged the rockface, Yvon decided to “stop the damage completely” and phased out the flagship product. After about two years of research, Yvon invented an aluminum chockstone, which was a piece of equipment that supported “clean, no-damage rock climbing for next-generation climbers.” The replacement was remarkably rewarding. Yvon recalled the experience as “the moment that forged the ethos of the Patagonia company.” <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">A new identity with the same mission In the 1980s, Chouinard’s company changed its name to Patagonia and ventured into the business of producing outdoor apparel. It was during an ordinary outing dressed in his rugby jersey when Yvon took note of how well his lightweight shirt absorbed sweat. He had an <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">epiphany [1] that manufacturing functional climbing clothes that imitated properties of the jersey could be profitable, supporting the low-margin equipment business. To launch his outdoor clothing brand, Chouinard accelerated the development process of light, warm, and breathable fabric. Patagonia used polypropylene as its primary material in the 1970s and the early 1980s. Since 1984, the company has replaced all materials with polyester and used primary colors for its outdoor clothing items.  Even with the new brand identity, Yvon’s company stayed environmentally conscious. In 1994, Yvon found that 25 percent of the world's toxic pesticides were used to produce <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">conventional [2] cotton and decided to go organic. In the next year and a half, massive investments were made on the transition into exclusively using pure organic cotton. Chouinard continued to invest in developing functional and more eco-friendly fabric. This commitment led to a clothing line that was made out of recycled plastic. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Authentic environmentalism moved the marketWhile most companies that survived well into the 2000s have increased their advertising spendings, Patagonia stayed clear of commercial marketing. Instead, with its marketing resources, the company initiated pro-environment campaigns. They made efforts to sell used merchandise rather than new products by adjusting the exposure priority of search results on e-commerce platforms like eBay. On one particular Black Friday, an event that encapsulates American consumerism, the brand launched an ad with the line, “Don't buy this jacket,” which ironically led to a 40 percent sales increase. On another Black Friday, the advertisement copy was: "On Black Friday, we're donating 100% of sales to grassroots environmental groups as an Earth tax," which led to a sales figure over $10 million instead of the projected $2 million. These events demonstrate how far a sincere marketing message can go. Consumer trust, built by the company’s consistent efforts over the decades, led people around the world to support the brand and its environmental cause.   Rose Marcario, the former CEO, noted, "In the course of the past 15 years working in the financial industry, the gap between the values of life that I consider important and what I was doing had become increasingly and painfully wide. At one point, I decided to work for Patagonia, where I could realize the value of my life." Marcario left her position in 2020 since she felt like she “had learned everything [she] wanted to from Yvon.” She declined offers from other companies as she transitioned out because “other companies … were more contributing to our environmental problems and not solving them.” Again, Patagonia has now grown into a global company, reporting more than 20 to 30 percent annual growth without any commercial advertising. This financial success points to the alignment of the brand’s <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">eco-friendly [3] mission with the value chain. Patagonia has a mission to be green and has demonstrated, through its products and marketing, that it’s really taking it seriously, creating a system that both protects the environment and the bottom line.
