Picture description exercises are an excellent means of enhancing your English speaking skills and preparing for real-life situations where English proficiency is required. By describing a special place or event, or sharing your experiences, you can expand your vocabulary and practice your pronunciation and intonation.
To ensure accurate and clear descriptions, it's crucial to speak in a methodical [1] order: you might start from the left of the picture and move right, or begin with objects closer to you in distance and gradually progress to those that are farther away. By doing so, you can effectively convey the context of the image and avoid confusion.
To effectively compare and contrast [2] two pictures, first identify both the similarities and differences between the images. After identifying these elements, you can then highlight [3] the key features of each picture in a clear and concise manner.
*This lesson is designed to aid in preparing for the picture description portion of the SPA (Speaking Proficiency Assessment) exam. To learn more about specific tips for this exercise, refer to the Editor’s note of the material titled [Practice] Picture Descriptions (1) (SPA).

Both pictures show machines that help people move between different floors of a building. The one on the left shows an escalator, which looks like a set of stairs that can move by themselves between floors. The picture on the right shows an elevator, which goes straight up and down between floors. You’d need to select your desired floor entering an elevator. While you see escalators in shopping malls, in places like hospitals, you’ll usually only see elevators.
