If you have been following news from the tech community, you have probably heard of FAANG, an abbreviation of Facebook (now rebranded as Meta), Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google. Also called Big Tech, much of the work that went into building our highly connected internet-of-everything society could <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">be attributed to [1] these companies. However, industry leadership seems to have <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">changed hands [2] from FAANG to MATANA (Microsoft, Amazon, Tesla, Apple, Nvidia, and Alphabet). In a recent video interview with Yahoo Finance, analyst Ray Wang argued that the FAANG abbreviation does not reflect current market trends and should be reassessed. According to Wang, MATANA is an upgraded version of FAANG that adds Microsoft, Tesla, and Nvidia to the mix, dropping Facebook and Netflix. Facebook, now Meta, has been dealing with a host of challenges that sent its stocks tumbling in recent years. In 2022, the firm saw a 73 percent decline in its share price. After Meta reported its second consecutive sales drop in October, they blamed the <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">looming [3] recession and the lingering effects of Apple’s iOS privacy update in 2021 that made it more difficult to track users across the internet. But investors seem more concerned about Meta’s extensive investment in the metaverse. According to McKinsey, the metaverse attracted $177 billion in investment since the start of 2021, but critics have questioned why the metaverse graphics still “sucks” after tons of cash have been poured into the project.  Coming to Netflix, Wang says, “The reason they’re out is because, how many more subscribers? How many more subscriptions are you going to handle? … Product placement should be where they are, plus the ability to do IP [intellectual property] licensing. Look at how Disney makes its money.” Netflix’s profitability depends on its ability to attract and retain subscribers, and when growth in subscription and revenue seemed to <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">plateau [4] out in the first half of 2022, investors became skeptical of the streaming giant’s future. As for Microsoft and Nvidia, Wang argued:  “Microsoft has more than just business-to-business and consumer—they’ve been able to manage both,” he said. “They’re positioned well for the metaverse. They’re positioned well for the cloud and, of course, they’ve got their gaming business.” “Nvidia is a lot more than just the chips that we look at and more than the data center or gaming,” Wang said. “They’re sitting at the edge between AI, the metaverse, the future of computing, and the way they do their partnerships, they’re set up in a way that’s going to be dominant for quite some time.” These two, alongside Tesla, owned by Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest man, have risen to the top of Big Tech’s food chain. Despite Elon Musk’s recent ruckus with Twitter and negative press on Tesla cars, the company reported strong sales figures in the third quarter of 2022, which were 42 percent up from the 241,391 vehicles in the third quarter of 2021.
