The most recent <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Trend Korea 2023 <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">retrospectively [1] analyzes 2022 market trends, and predicts consumer behavior in 2023 through keywords, including, "polarization," "office Big Bang," and "cherry-sumer."  Among these keywords, “cherry-sumer,” combining “cherry-picking” and “consumer,” reflects a curious amalgam of the country’s economic situation and the characteristics of younger generations. Cherry-sumers are calculative consumers who prefer to make reasonable purchases, seek bargain deals, and tighten their purse strings if needed. The word reflects the willingness of consumers to make individualized decisions, and the <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">propensity [2] to be less influenced by what everyone else around them is doing. Cherry-sumers also coincide with an economic downturn characterized by strong dollars and high inflation. Rando Kim, one of the authors, argued in the book that “‘the average consumer’s concept that we<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> took for granted [3] doesn’t exist anymore … companies should refine their targeting and not rely on mass market behaviors.” While consumers in a recession economy prioritize cost-effectiveness over sheer quality or quantity, their willingness to invest in items they desire remains high. Even cherry-sumers will purchase a product that <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">feels necessary to them, making it more important that companies clearly identify and cater to their target market.  One fun observation can be made about cherry-sumers: they are an updated form of the “cherry-picker.” Cherry-pickers describe consumers who take advantage of perks and benefits companies offer without buying anything. If the word cherry-picker has a negative connotation, however, cherry-sumer is a neutral term that captures the desire to make rational decisions in difficult times.
