Is STEM the Only Path to Success

The job market is changing. Constantly, the type of, demand for, and working conditions around jobs change hastily, requiring employers and potential employees to alter their expectations for what is needed to succeed in an ever-changing environment. As the future rapidly approaches, and new skills come to be prized with the advent of new technologies, how—and what—one should study to land a job requires strict scrutiny. On this question, experts are divided into two opposing camps. The first argues that science and engineering professions, characterized by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) degrees, will be in the spotlight.  Per a McKinsey report (The future of work after COVID-19) that analyzes job markets in eight major countries, more than 100 million workers will need to find a different occupation by 2030. But high-wage jobs in health care and STEM may grow, reflecting greater societal attention to health care as well as a growing need for people who can create and maintain new technologies. The second camp, however, asserts that the most valuable job in the future is one that entertains and inspires others. They argue that contributing to the emotional stability of the general public will be a critical future task, and liberal arts students will be well-equipped to handle this challenge. In the same vein, Scott Hartley, a global venture capitalist and author, emphasizes the role of the liberal arts in the age of artificial intelligence. In his book, “The Fuzzy and The Techie,” quoting Steve Jobs, he writes, “it's technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the result that makes our heart sing.” He argues that in a world where access to technology is nearly ubiquitous and technology falls out of use quickly, the ability to understand human behavior is only possible for those with a deep understanding of humans.  How important are these considerations to us? About 40% of college students report that they want to pursue a career [1] in a field different from their major. While this may seem like an alarmingly high number, some might argue that pursuing a career in a field not directly related to one’s major produces deeper growth and development (at least in the way of thinking).  Many liberal arts systems stress the importance of forming strong foundations [2] in language arts, social science, history, and beyond. Students are taught to think critically, rather than to memorize. Years of liberal arts education teach students transferable skills, which they can use to find a career path best suited to their interests. Though we have only discussed the unique challenges the future will bring, like our forebears, adaptability to change likely remains the most important skill.
