A Brief History of the Wristwatch

Students are banned from wearing any kind of wristwatches in the exam. 

Apple Watch’s battery life is shorter than what many traditional wristwatch owners are used to.

IntroductionThe oldest wristwatch [1] in history dates back to at least 1505. Originally intended as women’s fashion, they were fragile instruments worn for looks. Gradually, they became integrated into our daily life, but still, in the early history of watches, shortly after they were deemed sturdy enough to be worn by men, watches were worn for war.  It’s rather old-fashioned, the notion of having time so handily on one’s wrist. When watches were used in war, they were synchronized so that military timings and attacks could be optimally achieved.  EvolutionWatches have evolved dramatically since then; in 1926, they became water and dust resistant. In the late 1960s, watches became electronic, which was an impressive feat of technology. Then in the 1980s, you saw the combination of watches and computing, the precursors in a sense to the modern smartwatch. Casio created a line of “calculator watches,” as the name suggests, watches that had calculators built in.  Fast forward to the late 2010s, and we find ourselves with the Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch, Fitbit Versa, and Garmin smart watches. In many ways, these devices have time-keeping as a most basic capability. Beyond that, they take calls, respond to messages, and track health capacities.  In fact, in early 2020, several people have attributed life-saving stories to their Apple Watch, with its health-tracking features detecting potentially deadly heart rhythms and notifying them before it was too late. In spite of the fact that watches are still used for military purposes, they now exist in a duality [2].

들어가며 역사상 가장 오래된 손목시계는 적어도 1505년까지 거슬러 올라갑니다. 원래 시계는 여성 패션 소품으로 멋을 위해 착용하는 부서지기 쉬운 물건이었습니다. 이후 점차 일상 생활에서도 흔하게 쓰이게 되었지만, 그래도 시계사의 초반에는 남자들이 착용할 만큼 충분히 튼튼하다고 인정된 후에야 그들이 전쟁터에 나갈 때 차고 나가는 물건이었습니다.  손목에서 쉽게 시간을 확인할 수 있다는 개념은 꽤나 구식입니다. 전쟁에서 시계가 사용되었을 때는 군사 작전의 타이밍이나 공격을 최적화하기 위해 시간이 서로 일치하도록 시계를 맞추었습니다. 진화손목시계는 그 이후로 급격히 진화해서, 1926년에는 물과 먼지에 강한 내성을 갖게 되었습니다. 1960년 후반에는 전자식 시계가 나왔는데, 이는 놀라운 기술 발전의 결과였습니다. 그리고 1980년대에는 현대 스마트워치의 선구자격인 시계와 컴퓨터의 조합이 등장했습니다. 카시오는 “계산기 시계” 라인을 출시했으며 그것은 이름에서 알 수 있듯이 계산기가 내장된 시계였습니다.  2010년대 후반으로 오면 애플 워치, 갤럭시 워치, 핏빗 버사, 그리고 가민 스마트워치 등의 제품을 주변에서 쉽게 볼 수 있습니다. 여러가지 방식으로 시간을 재는 것이 이 장치들의 가장 기본적인 기능입니다. 그외에도 이를 이용해서 전화를 받고 메시지에 응답하며 건강상태를 추적할 수 있습니다.  사실 2020년초에 여러 사람들이 애플 워치의 건강상태 추적기능 덕분에 목숨을 구했다고 주장하기도 했습니다. 잠재적으로 매우 위험할 수 있는 심장 박동을 감지하고 너무 늦기 전에 경고를 해주었다는 것입니다. 시계는 여전히 군사적 목적으로 사용되고 있지만 현대의 시계는 이중적인 존재가 되었습니다.
