In January 2022, Microsoft announced plans to acquire Activision Blizzard, a game publisher, for $68.7 billion (₩82 trillion). If the acquisition goes through, it would be the largest deal in Microsoft and the game industry’s history.  In making this bid, Microsoft was driven by a simple but powerful reason: to buy Activision's games and its potential to create new hits. Activision’s games designed to run on consoles, PCs, or smartphones include: Warcraft, Diablo, Starcraft, Overwatch, Call of Duty, and the Candy Crush Saga. These names, however, might not ring a bell if you're not a gamer. That said, adding a few iconic games to Microsoft’s lineup carries larger implications for the gaming industry. Some changes are more foreseeable than others, one of which is the impact on the rivalry between Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation. Microsoft will be able to leverage Activision’s games designed for multiple platforms to draw more users to Xbox. Of course, the acquisition itself shouldn’t affect existing contractual agreements between Activision and Sony, but it is unclear whether Sony will still have access to those games and on what terms once the agreements expire. Reflecting these concerns, Sony's stock price has gone down 15% since Microsoft’s blockbuster bid [1]. Another major effect will be the growth of Microsoft Game Pass, which has been the company’s primary focus. Game Pass is a monthly subscription service that gives users access to a rotating [2] catalog of games from various publishers. Microsoft plans to add Activision's popular games to the Game Pass library, enticing gamers to open their wallets. Last but not least, Microsoft can strengthen its presence in the mobile games arena, which has greater growth potential than the console and PC sectors. "We all know that the world's best game device is a cell phone," said Phil Spencer, MS Gaming CEO. Activision owns a mobile game studio, King LTD, that developed Candy Crush, one of the most popular mobile phone games. As with any business deal, the acquisition requires multiple steps. Among other requirements, the deal must first be approved by the Federal Trade Commission, which has recently moved towards stricter regulation of large tech companies. Although Microsoft publicly expressed confidence, only time will tell whether the deal will go through and eventually change the future of the video gaming industry.
