Personalized Perfumes for Millennials

Millennials and Gen Zs, now in their 20s and 30s, have become major consumers of the market. As with any generational cohort, these new generations have their particularities that distinguish them from their <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">predecessors [1]. According to Bloomberg and Deloitte, young consumers consume for their identity. They consider their identities to be one of a kind and want their purchases to reflect this fact, placing value on personalized items. Baby Boomers or Generation Xers, on the other hand, consume for ideology or status, not for individuality. Le Labo, a personalized perfume brand, is taking advantage of Millennials and Gen Zers’ penchant for unique products. The Brooklyn-based perfume brand allows a customer to choose some of the 18 available scents at one of their so-called “laboratories” where clients can touch and smell raw ingredients and explore the notes of each fragrance. Once they select the scents that speak to them, a perfumer will hand-blend them on the spot. Not only that, the customer can select what’s printed on the bottle-- they can title their own perfume. Le Labo sets itself apart from traditional perfume shops by way of leading a purchaser to become emotionally attached to their own perfume formula. As much as a customer is bottling scents of their choice, they are also bottling an experience. “We work to make the lives of people more beautiful by creating unique sensorial experiences, and our craft is deeply rooted in slow perfumery,” says Le Labo. The brand, launched in 2006, has grown significantly since it was acquired by Estée Lauder. It is estimated that Estée Lauder paid up to twice as much as Le Labo's annual retail sales (these figures are estimated to have been around $20 to $30 million at the time). In its announcement to acquire Le Labo, Estée Lauder praised Le Labo, saying, “The brand has built a loyal following based on its high-quality products and unique retail experiences, which emphasize exceptional service, personalized products, and exclusivity.” The beauty conglomerate seems to have recognized Le Labo’s ability to <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">monetize [2] the individuals’ self-expression, which it hopes to foster with their immense capital. In addition, the conglomerate hopes to incorporate Le Labo’s expertise into Estée Lauder sub brands. Le Labo seems to be a part of a bigger trend for personalization. The entire perfume industry has taken this “personalization” shift seriously by way of diversifying their product line and innovating products based on specific customer needs. Now, many product descriptions promise an intimate and personal experience. Another Estée Lauder sub brand Jo Malone Perfumes, for example, made similar claims as it launched engraving and monogramming services. It encourages customers to connect with their perfume on an emotional level by engraving the name of someone significant or a date on the perfume bottle. Although their exact approach was different from Le Labo’s, the objective is the same-- to turn perfume into a distinctive personal experience and win the hearts of younger generations.
