From advertisements on the internet to GPS apps on your phone, you are constantly being tracked. Sites that you visit on the internet store something called cookies on your device, in order to identify your preferences (say, for a target language on a site) but these same cookies are then used to easily identify you the next time you visit their website. Cookies can be deleted, and disabled, but there is a more nefarious [1], more invasive kind of tracking, called fingerprinting, that you simply have no control over.  Fingerprinting is a means of tracking by which an advertiser creates a unique profile on you based on publicly available information that you reveal while visiting a website. For example, when visiting a site, your computer’s OS, your browser, and your screen size are all visible to the website. Although this is a simplified example, a more nefarious advertiser on the site could use this specific combination of information to deduce that the visitor is most likely to be you. Since this deduction takes place on the advertiser’s end, there is very little that you, as an end user, can do to stop it.  In some ways, though, fingerprinting might be the least of our concerns. How realistically worried should we be about advertisers recognizing us by our profiles when we already carry the equivalent of sophisticated tracking devices in our pockets? Every phone created carries a unique 15-digit identifier, also known as an IMEI. This number is distinct from any other IMEI number in the world; even two identical iPhones will have different IMEIs.  As you move from one place to the next, even without your GPS turned on, cellular towers can be used to triangulate [2] a rough location. Although this isn’t as accurate as GPS, it can still be used to get a rough estimate of someone’s travel history.  Ultimately, technology has enabled a great deal of convenience in the 21st century, but it raises new and fascinating questions about the value of privacy. How much privacy is acceptable to give up in the name of convenience? Conversely, what might be considered an appropriate amount of “tracking,” when it comes to advertisements?

GPS만큼 정확하지는 않지만 이것을 이용하면 누군가의 여행 기록을 대략적으로 추정할 수 있습니다. 21세기에 우리는 기술의 힘으로 많은 편리함을 누리게 되었지만 그것은 프라이버시의 가치에 대한 새롭고도 흥미로운 의문을 제기합니다. 과연 편리함이라는 이름으로 프라이버시를 얼마만큼 포기하는 것이 적절할까요? 반대로, 광고와 관련해서는 어느 정도의 "추적"을 적절한 수준이라고 여겨야 할까요?
