Donald Trump, a well known Twitter user, was banned from the social media platform after his supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021. This decision came after an assessment of Trump’s tweets, the conclusion of which was that his tweets led to the violent insurrection.  At the moment, Trump is challenging his ban from Twitter in a lawsuit. Having relied on his online presence to win the 2016 presidential campaign, he considers the social network an important component in having history repeat itself: winning the 2024 presidential election.  In the meantime, the former president seems to have taken matters into his own hands. He launched a new social media platform called TRUTH Social. Through this channel, he attempts to reclaim his online presence and address his Republican audiences. According to Morning Consult, 60% of Republicans plan to sign up for TRUTH Social.  Critics have pointed out that this platform is specifically designed for political purposes; TRUTH Social’s terms of service states that users may not “disparage, tarnish, or otherwise harm, in our opinion, us and/or the Site.” Coupled with the clause that the company will not have any limitations in <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">redressing [1] the terms’ violators, it mostly means that Trump’s critics can be booted off the site or even face legal action. One of the reasons underlying Trump’s obsession with social media is its potential to be used as an election campaign tool. However, most social media users—particularly Twitter—are disproportionately left-leaning. Moreover, according to Pew Research Center’s 2019 study, in 2018, 60% of Twitter users identified as a Democrat and only 35% as a Republican. In reality, in the 2016 presidential election, Trump received fewer votes from demographic groups that are more likely to be on social media and the internet more broadly.  Considering this fact, Trump’s emphasis on addressing his online audience seems to be misguided — the majority are not his allies after all. This calls for the question: why is Trump hooked on Twitter (and social media in general)? Below are some interesting explanations. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">To undermine the credibility of traditional mediaIn traditional media, news is provided by media companies, conventional journalism acting as a <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">gatekeeper [2]. On the other hand, social media journalism is more distributed and less regulated in nature and takes a more direct route to its audiences.  Against traditional media outlets that often hold Trump up to scrutiny, he has strived to carve out a place to distribute a competing narrative. To this end, he has actively used social media to undermine the credibility of traditional media.  This can be witnessed in one of Trump's favorite phrases: "fake news," which appeared roughly 900 times in his tweet history dating back to 2009. He uses this word to delegitimize media companies as suppliers of false information, and by extension, to elevate his own tweets as a superior source of information. Indeed, in a statement in the TRUTH Social press release, Trump said that TRUTH Social was made to “stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech.” <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Supplying a story for his followersIn continuum, Trump wants to supply a story for his followers on social media. Instead of trying to persuade his haters, he has chosen to focus on those that love him already. According to a 2021 paper by Monahan and colleagues, Trump’s storytelling on Twitter allowed him to appoint himself as the savior of a society that is breaking down due to the incompetence of democrats (and other political enemies). With what he has been able to do with his social media, it is not surprising that Trump is trying so hard to get back online. Only time will tell if Trump will be able to regain his political influence through his new online platform.
