IntroductionIf you find yourself building a rudimentary house late at night out of the wood you collected during the day, you might just be playing a game of Minecraft. (Alternatively, you could be in a terrifying real-life situation.) Born in 2009, which would make it twelve years old today (as of October 2021), Minecraft is a sandbox game created by Swedish developer Markus "Notch" Persson. Its intellectual property rights have since been purchased by Microsoft, and the game has expanded to be playable on most consoles, operating systems, and even iPhone and Android devices. The game originated with two modes, survival and creative, making for a different experience for different kinds of players.  Survival modeSurvival mode entails living out “life” within the blocky world of Minecraft. Players must first find wood, then coal, then eventually create tools with more advanced minerals [1]. The most rudimentary tools are made of wood, and the most efficient and powerful tools are made of diamond. Much of the gameplay in survival mode emulates real life, although there are some meaningful differences. For one, monsters (as we know them in Minecraft) don’t exist in real life. Likewise, Minecraft in survival mode gives players the opportunity to enter a few alternate universes, one called The Nether, a fiery world filled with zombie pigs, and The End, an even more frightening world that looks somewhat like cheese. Getting to the alternate universes in Minecraft survival is no breeze, but it’s rumored that going to The End and defeating the Ender Dragon allows a player to “win” the game. Of course, Minecraft survival could be played on for forever, hypothetically.  Creative modeCreative mode differs from survival mode in that players can fly by default. The point of this mode is not to survive, or to collect, or even to mine. Rather, players have an infinite amount of all blocks available in the game, and the only goal is, as the name implies, to create. Those with artistic inclinations might particularly love this mode, using it to build out entire cities, monsters, statues, and more. In fact, when the pandemic struck in 2020, the American college of UC Berkeley created its campus in Minecraft and hosted graduation virtually there!  In 2016, Minecraft: Education Edition was released. This platform, albeit still relatively new, offers unique opportunities for educators to provide virtual lessons and enact [2] lesson plans for classes by way of the Minecraft world. (그것이 아니라면, 여러분은 아주 끔찍한 현실에 처해 있는 걸 수도 있습니다.) 2009년에 생겨나 올해로 (2021년 10월 기준) 12살이 되는 마인크래프트는 스웨덴 개발자 마르쿠스 “노치” 페손이 만든 샌드박스게임(플레이어가 창의력을 발휘해서 임무를 완수하는 형태의 비디오게임)입니다. 이후 마이크로소프트가 이 게임의 지적 재산권을 샀고 게임은 대부분의 콘솔, 운영체계, 심지어 아이폰 및 안드로이드기기에서도 플레이 할 수 있도록 확장되었습니다. 이 게임은 생존(서바이벌)과 창작(크리에이티브)의 두 가지 모드로 시작하여 다양한 플레이어들에게 여러 다른 경험을 제공합니다. 생존모드게임의 생존모드에서, 플레이어들은 마인크래프트의 벽돌 같은 세계 안에서 "삶"을 살아야 합니다. 그를 위해 플레이어들은 먼저 나무, 그 다음 석탄을 찾아야 하고, 더 좋은 고급 광물로 도구를 만들어야 합니다. 가장 기본적인 도구들은 나무로 만들어지고, 가장 효율적이고 강력한 도구들은 다이아몬드로 되어 있습니다. 생존모드로 게임을 할 때 대부분은 현실의 삶과 비슷하지만, 몇 가지 의미 있는 차이점이 있습니다. 하나는 괴물(우리가 알고 있는 마인크래프트의 괴물)들이 현실의 삶에는 존재하지 않는다는 것입니다. 또, 생존모드의 마인크래프트는 플레이어들에게 돼지 좀비로 가득 찬 불의 세계 ‘네더’와 치즈처럼 보이는 훨씬 더 무서운 세계 ‘엔드’ 등 몇 개의 대체 우주에 들어갈 수 있는 기회를 제공합니다. 마인크래프트의 생존모드에서 다른 우주에 도달하는 것은 쉬운 일은 아니지만, 엔드로 가서 엔더 드래곤을 물리치면 플레이어가 게임에서 "승리"할 수 있게 해준다는 이야기가 있습니다. 물론 이론상으로 마인크래프트의 생존 게임은 끝없이 계속할 수 있습니다. 창작모드창작모드는 플레이어가 기본적으로 모두 비행 기능을 장착했다는 점에서 생존모드와 구별됩니다. 이 모드의 핵심은 생존이나 수집, 심지어 채굴도 아닙니다. 대신 플레이어는 게임에서 사용할 수 있는 모든 블록을 무한대로 가지고 있고 유일한 목표는 이름에서 알 수 있듯이 창조하는 것입니다. 예술적인 성향을 가진 사람들은 도시 전체, 괴물, 조각상 등을 지을 수 있는 이 모드를 특히 좋아할 것입니다. 실제로 2020년 팬데믹이 닥쳤을 때 미국 UC 버클리는 마인크래프트에서 캠퍼스를 만들고 그곳에서 가상 졸업식을 개최했습니다! 2016년에는 교육용 마인크래프트 버전이 출시되었습니다. 이 플랫폼은 아직 새로운 것이긴 하나, 교육자들이 마인크래프트 세계를 통해 가상 수업을 하고 수업 계획을 실행할 수 있는 독특한 기회를 제공합니다. 마인크래프트를 해본 적이 있거나 교육용 마인크래프트에 참여해본 적이 있다면 여러분의 경험은 어땠었나요?
