Elon Musk’s SpaceX made history in September 2021 with the successful completion of the first civilian orbital spaceflight in human history. At the heart of the Inspiration4 mission was a fundraising project for the St. Jude Children’s Hospital: a pediatric healthcare and research facility. The mission met its fundraising goal by raising over $200 million for the organization. Jared Isaacman, the CEO of global e-commerce company Shift4 Payments, funded the mission and took one of the four seats on the spacecraft. Even though he is not a trained astronaut, Isaacman drew on his experience as a military pilot to take on the role of mission commander. Two of the remaining seats were donated to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, which selected Hayley Arceneaux, a physician assistant and a survivor of bone cancer, as their representative on the mission. The hospital raffled [1] off its second seat, with U.S. Air Force veteran Christopher Sembroski winning the chance to take the trip to space. The fourth and final seat was taken by entrepreneur Sian Proctor, the winner of a business idea competition hosted by Shift4 Payments. The four rookies undertook weeks of training at SpaceX before take-off.  Resilience, the spacecraft selected for the mission, began its journey into space on the 16th of September 2021. It was launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida before ascending to a peak altitude of 585km. After two days of orbit at this height, it was lowered to an altitude of approximately 365km before returning to Earth a day later, where it landed in the Atlantic Ocean near the Florida coastline.  Inspiration4 received extensive media coverage like any other remarkable space mission, but noticeable in this case was Netflix’s involvement.  During the mission, Netflix aired “Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space”— a four-part documentary series. This series gave viewers an inside look at the crew selection process and the grueling training they had to complete in order to make it [2] into space.  The mission’s fundraising was furthered by the production of a range of merchandise available online, including items that the crew took with them on their mission. This included a ukulele and NFT recordings of songs played on board during the spaceflight. The most unique item taken on the journey was some 60kg of hops, a flower, which were auctioned to Samuel Adams Beer, a Boston-based brewery, to be later developed into beer and sold. The success of the Inspiration4 mission opens the door to more civilian orbital space flights in years to come and marks another huge milestone [3] in SpaceX’s growing list of achievements.
