Since then, rechargeable batteries have flooded [1] our day-to-day lives, powering our phones, our laptops, and for some, even our watches. With the addition of battery-powered devices to our lives, a plethora of myths has started popping up. In this article, we’ll explore the truth value behind some of the most popular battery (and battery-saving) myths.  Myth #1: Rechargeable batteries should be discharged fully (to 0%) before being charged againFalse! This myth is from an older time, when Ni-MH (nickel metal hydride) batteries were the norm. In those cases, the batteries could have a “memory” effect that resulted in a lower time of use if they weren’t fully discharged before being recharged. Luckily, this is no longer the case. In fact, li-ion (lithium ion) batteries (those most commonly used today) are most content keeping a charge at around 80%. So, top up [2] often! Myth #2: Rechargeable batteries can explode, resulting in dangerous and sudden emergenciesThis one’s true. Batteries, especially the rechargeable kind stored in your phone, can be temperamental. This is why damaged phones can be particularly dangerous — especially if you notice that a phone is bent out of shape. Li-ion batteries, if punctured or bent aggressively, can short circuit [3], resulting in an uncontrolled chemical reaction.  Myth #3: Rechargeable batteries last forever, and never need to be changed — that’s why they’re rechargeable!Not quite. Batteries are what we call “consumable” products. Although rechargeable batteries can be recharged again and again, after a certain number of charges (called “cycles”), they will start to deteriorate. For the average cell phone battery, that means that in two years of regular use, the battery will only hold about 80% of the charge it did when it was new. Sad, but luckily, some phones still allow easy battery replacements! Now that you’ve familiarized yourself with some of the most common truths and myths about batteries, consider sharing your newfound knowledge. Knowledge, after all, is power.
