In going about our lives, we often tumble upon [1] emotionally charged conflicts. They surprise us with varying forms and intensity, but they are there — sometimes physical, and other times, passive-aggressive in nature. Such conflicts not only plague and amplify the gulf between individuals but also between groups, leading to warfare and international conflict.  On a personal level, relationship woes can be extremely frustrating because they usually involve resentment, pride, and fear. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix to protracted and emotionally charged disagreements. Caving in [2] to meet the demands of the counterpart will sow a seed of resentment in you; advancing your arguments will escalate the tension and impasse; avoiding discussion altogether will simply move the disagreement underground.  Thus, time and effort should be invested for two individuals to break free from adversarial patterns, and even after having a clear understanding of the nature of conflict, it takes much patience to heal from the damage done.  In the spirit of taking a careful approach, investigating the dimensions of conflicts can provide us with some hints. There are three models of human behavior that each focus on one dimension, explaining why we argue and what can lead to resolution.   The first dimension is that of reason, which is the primary focus of homo economicus (economic man). Underpinning the homo economicus model of human behavior is the assumption that people are motivated to find the most efficient way to have their interests met. Under this model, people lock horns to protect their interests, and as long as this goal is met, there is no conflict.  But homo economicus overlooks the fact that humans easily get invested in trivial matters. Emotions cut to the heart of our conflict, which is explained by the second dimension: homo emoticus (emotional man). This model explains our behaviors with emotion. Nevertheless, emotion doesn’t provide a satisfactory solution to conflicts since wounds have to heal before harmony is reached.  The third and final dimension, beneath reason and even beneath emotion is identity. Homo identicus is a behavioral model conceived by negotiation expert Daniel Shapiro. It is rooted in the principle “that human beings seek meaning in their existence.” Understanding the role of identity in conflicts is fundamentally important. According to Shapiro, emotionally charged conflicts have their charge because they implicate aspects of identity. In other words, when you feel like your identity is under attack, you hunker down into self-defense mode and become blinded to the possibility of harmony. There are always emotional triggers that set you off, which are the moments where you feel like your existence has been attacked. If our identities are at stake, emotionally charged conflicts seem to point to a grim conclusion. For harmony, one party must compromise their identity and become a different entity; otherwise, there is no bridging the gap between foes.  This hopeless diagnosis, nevertheless, is an illusion since identity is both fixed and fluid -- something negotiable. If identity is absolutely immutable, conflicts produce winners and losers. On the other hand, if identity is ever-changing, you cannot be held accountable for your actions, making the relationship pointless. How can someone be responsible for their behaviors in the past if they are now a completely different individual? Therefore, understand what part of your identity is flexible. Identity comprises a list of characteristics that define yourself, but as much as they define you, you can define those characteristics. Therefore, when you reach an emotional deadlock, think about what aspects of your identity to prioritize. For example, if you are involved in a protracted and adversarial relationship as a CEO, it may not be the best idea to prioritize and ferociously protect your social identities outside your professional realm. Another helpful approach is to “not take things personally.” Often, people interpret the words and actions of others in a way that implicates their identity. For someone who identifies themselves as a writer, a simple criticism of one line in their article can be received as a denial of the writer's identity. Don’t stretch [3] a line to define who you are as a writer; likewise, don’t stretch a single comment on a minor aspect into a wholesale attack on your noble identity.  As homo identicus, remember that preserving your identity and establishing harmony can be compatible goals.

살아가다보면 우리는 종종 감정적인 갈등 상황에 부딪히곤 합니다. 이 상황들은 우리가 놀랄 만큼 다양한 형태와 강도로 나타납니다. 때로는 신체적이기도 하고 때로는 수동적 공격성의 양상으로 띠기도 하지만 결국 갈등은 늘 있습니다. 이러한 갈등들은 개인 간의 골을 악화시키고 증폭시킬 뿐만 아니라 집단 간의 갈등은 전쟁과 국제적인 분쟁으로 이어지기도 합니다. 개인적인 차원에서, 인간관계상의 문제는 보통 원망과 자존심, 두려움을 수반하기 때문에 심한 좌절감을 줄 수 있습니다. 불행하게도 오래 지속된 감정적 대립 상태를 빠르게 해소할 수 있는 묘책은 없습니다. 상대방의 요구를 들어주기 위해 양보한다면 당신이 두고두고 상대를 원망하게 될 소지가 있습니다. 당신의 주장을 지나치게 개진한다면 상황을 더 긴장시켜 교착 상태에 빠질겁니다. 서로 얘기하는 것을 피하면 의견 차이를 모르는 척하고 덮어두는 것에 지나지 않습니다. 따라서 대립적인 상황에서 벗어나기 위해서는 쌍방 모두 시간과 노력을 투자해야 하며 갈등의 본질을 명확히 이해한 후에도 상처를 치유하는 데는 많은 인내가 필요합니다.  신중하게 접근하기 위해 갈등의 다양한 차원을 잘 살펴보면 몇 가지 힌트를 얻을 수 있습니다. 인간 행동을 설명하는 데는 세 가지 모델이 있는데, 각각은 갈등의 한 차원에 초점을 맞춤으로써 우리가 논쟁을 하는 이유와 그 해결방안이 무엇인지 설명해줍니다.   첫번째 차원은 호모 이코노미쿠스(경제의 인간)에 집중하는 이성의 차원입니다. 인간 행동에서 호모 이코노미우스 차원을 뒷받침하는 것은 인간은 자신의 이익을 충족시키는 가장 효율적인 방법을 찾고자 한다는 것을 가정합니다. 이 모델에서 인간은 자신의 이익을 보호하기 위해 충돌하며 이 목표가 충족되는 한 갈등은 없습니다.  하지만 호모 이코노미쿠스는 인간이 사소한 일에 쉽게 감정적으로 연루된다는 사실을 간과하고 있습니다. 감정은 인간 갈등의 핵심으로 그것은 두번째 차원으로 설명됩니다. 바로 호모 이모티쿠스(감정의 인간)입니다. 이 이론은 우리의 행동을 감정으로 설명합니다. 하지만 상처가 아물은 후에나 화합이 이루어질 수 있기 때문에 감정으로 설명하는 것은 갈등 상황에 대해 만족스러운 해결책을 제공하지 못합니다.  세번째이자 마지막 차원은 이성과 감정의 배후에 놓여 있는 정체성입니다. 호모 아이덴티쿠스(정체성의 인간)는 협상 전문가인 다니엘 샤피로가 고안한 행동모델입니다. 이는 "인간은 그들의 존재에서 의미를 찾는다"는 원칙에 기반을 두고 있습니다. 갈등에서 정체성의 역할을 이해하는 것은 근본적으로 중요합니다. 샤피로에 따르면, 감정적으로 변질된 갈등은 정체성의 측면을 포함하기 때문에 문제가 되는 것입니다. 다시 말해 자신의 정체성이 공격받고 있다고 느낄 때는 몸을 사리고 방어태세를 취하기 때문에 화합의 가능성을 보지 못하게 됩니다. 항상 당신을 자극하는 감정적 계기들은 있기 마련이고 그건 당신의 존재 자체가 공격을 받고 있다고 느끼는 순간들입니다. 만약 정체성이 위협을 받는다면, 감정으로 가득찬 갈등은 암울한 결론을 향하고 있을 수밖에 없습니다. 화합을 위해서는 한쪽이 본인의 정체성과 타협해서 다른 정체성을 취해야 하는데 만약 그렇지 않으면 서로 간의 간극을 메우는 것은 불가능합니다.  하지만 이런 진단은 환상에 불과합니다. 왜냐하면 정체성은 고정적인 동시에 유동적이기 때문입니다. 협상의 여지가 있는 것입니다. 정체성이 절대 불변이라면 갈등은 승자와 패자를 낳을 수밖에 없습니다. 반면에 만약 정체성이 계속 변한다면, 개인에게 그가 저지른 행동에 대한 책임을 물을 수 없게 되므로 행동과 책임의 관계는 무의미해집니다. 만약 어떤 사람이 과거와 완전히 다른 사람으로 변모해버렸다면 어떻게 현재의 그가 과거의 자기 행동에 책임을 질 수 있을까요? 그러므로 당신의 정체성 중 어떤 부분이 유동적인지 알아보세요. 정체성은 자신을 규정짓는 특성의 목록이라고 볼 수 있지만 그 목록이 당신을 규정하는 만큼 당신도 그 특성들을 규정할 수 있습니다. 따라서 당신이 감정적인 교착상태에 부딪치게 되면, 당신의 정체성의 어떤 측면을 우선시해야 할지 생각해보세요. 예를 들어 최고경영자로서 장기화된 적대관계에 얽혀있다면 직업의 영역 밖에 있는 사회적 정체성을 우선시하고 그것을 열렬히 보호하는 것은 좋은 생각이 아닐겁니다. 또 다른 유용한 접근법은 "상황을 사적인 것으로 받아들이지 않는 것"입니다. 사람들은 종종 다른 사람들의 말과 행동을 자신의 정체성에 대한 공격으로 해석합니다. 예를 들어 자신을 작가라고 생각하는 사람은 자기가 쓴 글에 나온 한 줄에 대한 간단한 비판을 작가로서의 자기의 정체성 전체를 부정하는 것으로 받아들일 수 있습니다. 글 한 줄이 작가로서 당신이 누구인지 정의한다고 생각하지 마세요. 마찬가지로 당신의 사소한 특성에 대한 한마디 말을 당신의 고귀한 정체성에 대한 전면적인 공격으로 확대해석하지 마세요. 호모 아이덴티쿠스로서, 자신의 정체성을 보존하는 것과 조화로운 인간관계를 맺는 것은 양립할 수 있는 목표라는 것을 명심하세요.
