The global chip shortage has been making headlines. Since early 2021, automakers have put their production lines on halt due to a lack of semiconductors used in automobiles, and phone makers, including Apple, have announced that they will taper [1] off production as they failed to secure enough chips. You might already be too late if you are planning to buy an electronic device for Christmas. So, what is a semiconductor chip?Semiconductors, the oil of the 21st century or the “rice” of industries as some might call them, are material products that conduct electricity under special circumstances and are essential to the electronics industry. There are largely two types of semiconductors: logic chips and memory chips. A logic chip processes and controls data without storing much information, while a memory chip stores information. Logic chips account for about 70% whereas memory chips account for about 30% of the global semiconductor market. Logic chips are typically used to produce the Central Processing Unit (CPU), which is the brain of the computer, and the Application Processor (AP), used in smartphones. Intel and Qualcomm are the largest producers of CPUs and APs, respectively. Logic chips come in a wide variety and are produced in small quantities for specific applications and fields. They tend to be less sensitive to various economic forces than memory chips owing to [2] the smaller investment scales and production schedule that focuses on fulfilling pre-orders. On the other hand, memory chips can be subdivided into two types: dynamic random-access memory (a fast but volatile type of semiconductor that cannot retain data without power) and NAND flash memory (a slower but non-volatile semiconductor memory that retains data even without power). Memory chips are standardized and manufactured mainly for general purposes, which leads to frequent mismatches in supply and demand. Currently, the memory chip market is dominated by a small number of companies, such as Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron. The expansion of the business cycleThe imbalance in supply and demand makes the memory chips industry notoriously cyclical. Under favorable market conditions, chipmakers have difficulty keeping up with demand. At a certain point, supply exceeds demand to cause prices and chip manufacturing levels to fall. These patterns periodically recur in the industry since it is extremely difficult to foresee seismic trends and schedule memory chip production accordingly, like when personal computers and smartphones became widespread or cloud data centers started springing up.  What is new is that this sort of mismatch is happening in the logic chip market as demand surges alongside the Fourth Industrial Revolution. As a result, chip shortages have atypically appeared in the logic chip market as well. The automotive chip shortage explainedExperts point at poor demand forecasting and COVID-19 for the current chip shortage among auto makers. Increase in demand for personal computers, laptops, mobile devices, and servers were expected at the onset of the pandemic. In contrast, demand for automobiles was expected to drop, prompting automakers to place fewer chip orders. Naturally, chip makers started channeling their production capacity to consumer electronics. However, a supply-demand imbalance appeared unexpectedly as automobile demand rapidly recovered after some time. Chip makers had had  no reason to suddenly ramp up production for automakers given that they had other orders to fulfill; moreover, automotive chips account for only 9% of the total semiconductor market and are less profitable. Automakers had an uphill battle ahead to secure enough chips to fulfill orders given increased demand. In addition, a cold wave hit the southern front of the US in February 2021, causing a large-scale power outage. As a result, both Infineon and NXP, the world's largest companies in the automotive chip market, shut down their factories. Renesas Electronics, the third-largest company in the industry, shut down its Japan facility due to a fire, worsening the global chip shortage. The problem is that there is no quick fix [3] to this shortage issue. While manufacturers haven’t fulfilled their existing orders, semiconductors generally take three to six months to be delivered. Heated competition to secure chips continues while lack of proper equipment makes it challenging to ramp up production to resolve the imbalance in supply and demand.   What’s next The scope of the chip shortage is not limited to the auto industry. Semiconductor companies have recorded remarkable profits in recent years because demand significantly increased with innovations led by artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and 5G technology. Now, as people spend more time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, home appliances are in demand, exacerbating the chip shortage. Fueled by this shortage, it is projected that the semiconductor market is once again poised for significant growth. For example, the memory chip market is expected to experience a 31.7% growth in 2021. Hamstrung by the chip shortage, major players in the automobile and electronics industries are increasing their investment in semiconductors or internalizing production. Even President Biden has put pressure on chipmakers to provide sensitive internal data to help address the shortage in the U.S.

전세계적으로 반도체 부족에 대한 기사가 연이어 나오고 있습니다. 2021년 초부터 자동차에 사용되는 반도체 부족으로 자동차 제조사의 생산 라인이 멈추었다는 소식이 들리더니, 이제는 애플같은 모바일폰 제조 업체들도 충분한 반도체 확보에 실패해 생산량을 줄인다 합니다. 크리스마스 때 전자제품을 선물하려면 지금부터 서둘러도 늦다는 말이 나오는 이유입니다.  반도체란? 21세기의 석유, 산업의 쌀이라고 불리는 반도체는 특별한 조건하에서만 전기가 통하는 물질로, 전기전자 산업에서 핵심적인 역할을 수행합니다. 반도체는 크게 정보 저장 없이 연산/제어 기능을 수행하는 시스템 반도체와, 정보를 저장하는 메모리 반도체와로 구분합니다. 전 세계 반도체 시장에서 시스템 반도체는 약 70%, 메모리 반도체 분야가 약 30%의 비중을 차지합니다.  시스템 반도체는 컴퓨터의 두뇌인 CPU(대표적인 기업은 인텔), 스마트폰의 AP(대표적인 기업은 퀄컴)가 대표적인 제품입니다. 시스템 반도체 분야는 응용 분야별로 세분화/특화되어 있는 특성 때문에 다품종 소량생산 방식으로 제작됩니다. 상대적으로 투자 부담이 작고 사전 주문에 따라 맞춤 제작에 들어가는 경우가 많아, 메모리 반도체에 비해서는 경기 변동에 상대적으로 둔감하다고 알려져 있습니다.  반면, 메모리 반도체는 흔히 이야기하는 DRAM(전원이 꺼지면 메모리가 휘발되나 속도가 빠름)과 낸드플래쉬(전원이 꺼져도 메모리는 유지되나 속도가 상대적으로 느림)로 구분됩니다. 메모리 반도체는 범용 양산품 중심의 소품종 대량생산 시장으로, 수요/공급 간 불균형이 비교적 자주 발생합니다. 현재는 삼성전자, SK하이닉스, 마이크론 등 소수의 업체가 과점하고 있습니다.  빅사이클 범위의 확대메모리 반도체 산업의 수급 불균형은 악명이 높은 산업 사이클을 만들어 냅니다. 시장이 호황일 때면, 반도체 업체들은 수요를 맞출 수 없어 허덕입니다. 하지만 어떤 때가 되면 공급이 수요를 넘어서면서 가격과 반도체 제조라인 가동률이 낮아집니다. 스마트 폰의 확산, 클라우드 업체들의 데이터 서버 구축 확대 등 산업의 큰 트렌드를 사전에 정확하게 예측하고 반도체 공급 일정을 맞추는 것(장비 구입, 미세 공정 확보, 라인 증설 등)은 매우 어렵기 때문에 메모리 반도체 분야의 사이클은 앞으로도 주기적으로 반복될 것입니다. 새로운 점은 최근 4차 산업혁명에 따라 시스템 반도체 수요가 급증하면서 이 분야에도 설계와 제작 사이에서 불균형이 발생하고 있다는 것입니다. 결과적으로 반도체 수급의 불안정성은 시스템 반도체 분야까지 확대될 것으로 보인다는 것입니다.  자동차 반도체 공급 부족의 원인 전문가들은 현재 진행 중인 자동차 반도체 공급 부족 발생의 가장 큰 이유는 수요예측 실패와 재해라고 분석합니다. 코로나를 겪으면서 PC, 노트북, 모바일 기기에 대한 수요가 증가하고, 서버 수요도 급증했습니다. 이에 반해 자동차는 코로나로 인한 수요 급감이 예상되었고, 자동차 업체들은 반도체 발주를 줄였습니다. 당연히 반도체 제조사들은 가전용으로 생산라인을 전환했습니다.  그러나, 예상 외로 자동차 수요가 빠르게 회복되면서 수급 불균형이 심화되기 시작했습니다. 생산자 입장에서는 이미 받아놓은 주문이 있는데다, 전체 반도체 시장에서 차지하는 규모도 9%에 불과하고 다른 분야에 비해 수익성은 떨어지는 자동차 관련 반도체 생산을 갑자기 늘릴 이유는 없었습니다. 자동차 업체는 늘어난 생산 계획을 채울만한 반도체 확보 방법이 요원했습니다.  여기에 더해 21년 2월 미국 남부 지역에 발생한 한파와 이로 인한 대규모 정전은 사태를 더욱 심각하게 만들었습니다. 이 사태로 인해 차량용 반도체 시장 세계 1, 2위 업체인 인피니언과 NXP가 모두 공장 가동을 중단했습니다. 또한 세계 3위 업체인 일본의 르네사스 일렉트로닉스 공장이 화재로 가동 중단에 빠지면서 반도체 부족은 전 세계로 확대되었습니다. 문제는 이 현상이 단기간 내 해결이 어렵다는 것입니다. 반도체 납기에 3~6개월이 소요되는데다 생산업체들이 기존에 받은 주문도 아직 처리하지 못하고 있기 때문입니다. 생산을 늘리는 것도 장비 부족으로 인해 어려운 상황이며, 공급 부족 이슈로 인해 반도체 재고를 추가로 확보하려는 업체들간의 경쟁이 이어지면서 수급 불균형은 더욱 심화되고 있습니다. 반도체 호황과 그 이후반도체 공급 부족은 자동차 분야에만 국한된 것은 아닙니다. 최근 몇 년간 반도체 업체들이 높은 이익을 기록한 이유는 인공지능, 클라우드 컴퓨팅, 5G의 확산 등 산업의 변화로 반도체 칩 수요가 크게 증가했기 때문입니다. 여기에 더해 코로나로 인해 집에서 보내는 시간이 길어지면서 가전제품에 대한 수요가 급증해 반도체 공급 부족을 심화시켰습니다. 공급 부족이 장기화되면서 반도체 분야에 다시 한번 초호황이 올 것이라는 기대감이 커지고 있습니다. 일례로 2021년 메모리 반도체 시장은 전년 대비 31.7% 증가할 것으로 전망됩니다.  반도체 부족이 기업과 시장의 발목을 잡으면서 세계 주요국과 자동차, 전자 분야 주요 기업들은 반도체 투자를 늘리고, 생산을 내재화하려는 움직임을 보이고 있습니다. 특히 미국은 역내 반도체 부족 사태를 해결하기 위해 바이든 대통령까지 나서 반도체 기업의 핵심 정보까지 요구하는 등 압박에 나서고 있습니다.
