This year, the term “metaverse” has been bubbling up [1], and Mark Zuckerberg staked his claim in it by renaming his company “Meta.” But no one knows what it exactly means. It’s being thrown around like a buzzword and is often misunderstood as some version of virtual reality; although virtual reality may be a way we experience the metaverse, it is an oversimplification to equate these two concepts. Speaking of which, Matthew Ball has stated, “We shouldn’t expect a single, all-illuminating definition of the ‘Metaverse.’” He is a venture capitalist who writes on the subject and has explained that one or two technologies cannot define technological transformations. The mobile internet revolution, for example, was driven by a bundle of secondary innovations. Likewise, the metaverse is best described as a way in which many technologies overlap and interact. Or put it another way, it is a term that unifies a bunch of existing technologies, including NFTs, cryptocurrencies, virtual reality, and augmented reality.  Still, people with knowledge on the matter have tried to understand how the metaverse might work and develop. In his essay “Framework for the Metaverse,” Ball explains that the metaverse is “sort of a successor state to the mobile internet.” In other words, it’s an iteration [2] of the existing form of the internet rather than a replacement. And here is Ball’s best swing at describing that iteration: <blockquote style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;">“The Metaverse is a massively scaled and interoperable network of real-time rendered 3D virtual worlds which can be experienced synchronously and persistently by an effectively unlimited number of users, and with continuity of data.”</blockquote> If this characterization is too abstract, Zuckerberg’s take on the metaverse is more intuitive. He pictures a clear virtual world entered with headsets, and eventually, more advanced body sensors. In this world, he envisions people attending virtual events, collecting virtual assets, and having virtual avatars.  As with any new technology, people are divided on whether they like the metaverse idea. One opinion columnist wrote for the New York Times, “That sounds absolutely ridiculous,” responding to Zuckerburg’s ambition for the metaverse. In the same vein, some people think life is about living here and now rather than being immersed in a virtual world. Others view popularizing the word metaverse as Zuckerberg’s gimmick to save his dying company.  However, the metaverse will probably transform the way we interact with technology. It will revolutionize nearly every function and industry, including healthcare, payments, entertainment, and consumer products. We will be able to understand the impacts of this transformation only in hindsight.
