Facebook was once an online directory for college students, but its fast and widespread adoption has nothing less but transformed our communication. Mark Zuckerberg is the individual who has been at the forefront [1] of this progression. He established a company of the same name in 2004, which introduced the News Feed and acquired Instagram and WhatsApp. On October 28, 2021, Zuckerberg changed his company’s name from Facebook to Meta.  There is a lot to be said about Zuckerberg’s mapping of uncharted territory. As social media took the world by storm, the name Facebook became associated with disinformation, misinformation, data breach, and mental health issues, such as addiction and depression. The 2016 scandal was a wake-up call for the public as it was revealed that Facebook violated data protection laws by failing to protect user data, allowing Cambridge Analytica to collect personal information without consent. In 2018, Facebook came under scrutiny again as the platform was used by Myanmar’s military to incite the genocide of Rohingya Muslims.  But nothing quite matches the recent barrage of criticism it has faced after Frances Haugen, a former employee turned whistleblower, came forward. Haugen leaked thousands of pages of internal documents that allegedly show the company prioritizes profits before user safety. She testified before the US Congress, telling legislators, “Facebook’s products harm children, stoke division, and weaken our democracy.”  Haugen set off a firestorm [2], and another whistleblower has spoken to the Washington Post since then. This time, they alleged that the company puts profits before efforts to fight hate speech and misinformation on its platform. For its part, Zuckerberg’s company (now Meta) has denied all these allegations. Moreover, Zuckerberg said the rebrand to Meta wasn’t a move to sidestep bad publicity. He told the Verge, “We started well before the current cycle [of bad news]. I think the current cycle clearly had nothing to bear on [renaming the business from Facebook to Meta].” Heated discussions around Facebook may point to its demise, but the platform’s impacts will stay with us. After all, the platform has shaped the meaning of social media and how we experience the mobile internet.

원래 대학생들을 위한 온라인 주소록이었던 페이스북은 급속도로 널리 퍼지면서 우리의 소통 방식을 완전히 변모시켰습니다. 마크 저커버그는 이런 변화의 전면에 서있는 인물입니다. 그는 2004년 페이스북이라는 이름의 회사를 설립했고 그 회사는 뉴스 피드를 도입했고 인스타그램과 와츠앱을 인수했습니다. 2021년 10월 28일 저커버그는 회사 이름을 페이스북에서 메타로 바꾸었습니다.   아무도 가보지 않은 땅을 개척하는 저커버그의 방식에 대해서는 여러가지 할 말이 많습니다. 이 사회관계망이 세상을 사로잡음에 따라 페이스북이라는 이름은 점차 잘못된 정보, 오보, 데이터 유출, 중독과 우울증 등의 정신건강 문제와 연관되기 시작했습니다. 그러다 2016년의 불미스런 사건은 대중에게 경종을 울렸습니다. 페이스북은 개인들의 승낙 없이 케임브리지 어넬리티카가 개인 정보를 수집하는 것을 허용했고 사용자 정보를 보호하지 못함으로써 데이터 보호법을 위반한 사실이 드러난 것입니다. 2018년 페이스북은 미안마 군대가 로힝야 이슬람 교도들을 대학살하도록 선동하는 데 사용됨으로써 또다시 도마 위에 오르게 되었습니다.  하지만 페이스북으로 향한 비판의 화살은 최근 페이스북의 전 임직원인 프랜시스 하우겐이 회사의 내부 정보를 폭로하면서 그 어느 때와 비할 수 없이 거세졌습니다. 하우겐은 회사가 사용자의 안전보다는 회사의 이익을 우선시함을 보여주는 수천 페이지에 걸친 내부 자료를 몰래 빼내서 공개했습니다. 그녀는 미국 국회에서 한 증언을 통해 “페이스북의 상품들은 어린이들에게 해가 되고 사회의 분열을 조장하고 우리의 민주주의를 약화시킨다”고 말했습니다.  하우겐의 폭로가 격렬한 파급효과를 가져오는 가운데 또다른 내부 고발자가 워싱턴 포스트와 인터뷰를 했습니다. 이번에는 회사가 그들의 플랫폼에 떠도는 악의적인 글이나 그릇된 정보에 대응하기 보다는 이익을 중시한다는 주장이었습니다.  (이제 메타라고 불리는) 저커버그의 회사는 이 모든 주장을 부인했습니다. 나아가 저커버그는 회사이름을 메타라고 바꾸는 것은 이러한 나쁜 공론을 비켜가기 위한 조치가 아니라고 말했습니다. 그는 “버지”와의 인터뷰에서 이렇게 밝혔습니다. “이름을 바꾸기로 한 계획은 현재의 사건과 그 비판이 나오기 훨씬 전부터 시작된 것입니다. 현 사태는 회사 이름을 바꾸기로 한 결정과 아무런 상관도 없습니다.” 페이스북을 둘러싼 열띤 논쟁들은 이 회사의 몰락을 예고할 수도 있지만, 이 플랫폼의 영향력은 계속 우리에게 남아 있을 겁니다. 결국 페이스북은 이제까지 사회관계망의 의미를 정립하고 우리가 모바일 인터넷을 경험하는 방식을 형성해왔기 때문입니다.
