As agent Smith fires, Neo’s shoulders fling backward, away from the bullet’s trajectory. His body folds back, his arms circling and jacket billowing; the bullets miss his head and heart before hitting his leg.  This iconic bullet dodge scene is from The Matrix, a sci-fi thriller released in 1999. The film is full of gems [1], including other equally memorable action scenes. For over two decades, these scenes have been parodied multiple times, and the Matrix-look — small sunglasses and black leather coat — is still on trend. But its bearing on today’s culture goes beyond its contributions to fashion and cinema history. Particularly, the commentary on technology and sensory experience has become more relevant than ever.  The Matrix illustrates a dystopian future where mankind is enslaved by self-aware machines. In this future, humans are born into bondage; their bodies are harnessed to fuel machines, while their minds inhabit a simulated reality called the Matrix. “[The Matrix] is the world that has been pulled over your eyes, to blind you from the truth,” Morpheus tells Neo. The truth? Humans are attached to cords that sap biochemical and thermal energy out of them to feed machines in a post-apocalyptic world. In a simulated world, people think they are leading a normal life sometime around 1999.   The question is simple: how can you distinguish between a dream and reality when the experience technology can provide is so convincing? This question may have seemed far-fetched when the Matrix franchise was born in 1999. Two sequels came out in 2003, forming the Matrix trilogy. Time sped by, and in December 2021, we are expecting The Matrix Resurrections.  Waiting for the fourth installment, Matrix-like elements, such as inhabiting a digital world, are felt everywhere. For one thing, we mediate our lives through glowy rectangles: screens. We come together on Zoom, play Minecraft to escape the banalities [2] of life, react and comment on Instagram to express our love for friends. If anything, tech companies will make the presence of the internet clearer and more pronounced in the years to come. And for the time being, Mark Zuckerberg is at the forefront of taking the internet experience to the next level.  After Zuckerberg renamed his company to Meta on October 28, 2021, critics were swift in lampooning this move. Zuckerberg had stated that Meta will focus on creating an “embodied” internet where people are connected on an unending basis. One unexpected joke came from the Matrix franchise that dropped a modified version of its poster with the text, “Now, based on real events.” If the reference wasn’t obvious, the post had the hashtag ‘#Meta’. Perhaps, a future may come where we are always inside the internet rather than having access to it.

스미스 요원이 총을 쏘자, 네오의 어깨가 날아오는 총알의 궤적을 피해 뒤로 휙 젖혀 집니다. 그의 몸은 뒤로 꺾이고 양팔은 크게 원을 그리고 자켓은 펄럭입니다. 머리와 가슴을 빗나간 총알은 결국 다리에 맞고 맙니다.  이 총알을 피하는 명장면은 1999년에 개봉된 SF스릴러 영화 “매트릭스”에 나옵니다. 이 영화는 기억할 만한 다른 액션 씬을 포함해 주옥 같은 장면들로 가득합니다. 20년이 넘는 동안 이러한 장면들은 수없이 많이 패러디되었고, 작은 색안경과 검은 가죽코트 차림의 매트릭스 룩은 여전히 유행하고 있습니다. 하지만 이 영화와 오늘날 문화와의 연관성은 패션과 영화 역사에 기여한 것에 그치지 않습니다. 특히, 기술과 감각 체험에 대한 해석은 그 어느 때보다도 시의적절합니다.  영화 “매트릭스”는 인류가 자각 능력이 있는 기계의 노예로 전락한 미래의 디스토피아를 그리고 있습니다. 이 미래에서 인간은 속박된 노예로 태어납니다. 인간의 몸은 기계에 에너지를 공급하는 데 이용되고, 인간의 정신은 매트릭스라고 불리는 가상의 세계 속에서 살아갑니다. “[매트릭스]는 자네가 진실을 보지 못하게 하기 위해 자네의 눈 위에 덮어 씌워진 세상이네.” 모피우스가 네오에게 이렇게 말합니다. 그렇다면 진실은? 종말 이후의 세상에서 인간들은 자기 몸에서 생화학적 에너지와 열 에너지를 빼내어 기계에게 공급하기 위한 줄에 매달려 있습니다. 가상의 세계에서 사람들은 자기들이 1999년 즈음에 평범한 삶을 살아가고 있다고 생각합니다.  질문은 간단합니다: 기술이 만들어내는 경험이 너무나 실감나도록 진짜와 같을 때 당신은 꿈과 현실을 어떻게 구분할 수 있나요? 이 질문은 매트릭스 시리즈가 1999년 탄생되었을 때만해도 좀 황당한 것이었을 수 있습니다. 매트릭스는 2003년에 후속 영화 2편이 더 나오면서 3부작이 되었습니다. 시간은 흘러 우리는 2021년 12월에 개봉될 “매트릭스 부활”을 기다리고 있습니다.  4번째 영화를 기다리고 있는 지금, 우리는 매트릭스 영화에서 볼 수 있던 요소들-디지털 세상 안에서 살아가는 것 등-을 어디서나 느낄 수 있습니다. 한가지 예로 우리의 생활은 빛을 발하는 사각형의 것 즉, 화면을 통해서 연결됩니다. 우리는 줌(Zoom)에서 모이고, 따분함을 벗어나고자 마인크래프트를 하고, 인스타그램에서 반응을 표하고 댓글을 달면서 친구들에게 사랑을 표현합니다. 앞으로는 테크 기업들이 인터넷의 존재를 더 분명하고 더 두드러지도록 만들 것입니다. 그리고 현재 인터넷 경험을 다음 단계로 끌어올리고자 가장 전면에 나선 사람은 마크 저커버그입니다.  2021년 10월 28일, 저커버그가 자신의 회사 이름을 메타(Meta)로 바꾸자, 비평가들은 곧 이런 움직임을 풍자하고 나섰습니다. 저커버그는 메타가 사람들이 끊김 없이 늘 연결되어 있는 “체현된” 인터넷을 만드는 데 집중할 것이라고 발표했습니다. 이에 대해 예기치 않은 풍자가 매트릭스에서 나왔는데 그것은 바로 매트릭스 영화는 “이제 실제 일어난 사건을 바탕으로 한 것”이라는 문구가 적힌 포스터 수정본을 내놓은 것입니다. 그 뜻이 잘 전달되지 않을까봐 그 게시물에는 #Meta라는 해시태그가 달렸습니다. 아마도 미래에는 우리가 단지 인터넷에 접속하는 것이 아니라, 계속 인터넷 안에서 살게 될지도 모르겠습니다.
