타고나는 것 v. 사회적 영향에 의한 것?

One of the oldest questions of time is that of nurture versus nature. A clear answer to this question is so often difficult, if not impossible, to articulate. Society and biology interact in incredibly complex ways to form the underpinnings for how we come to understand and interpret the world.  Explaining empathy, our ability to relate and connect with others’ pain, sadness, and joy serves as an example. Empathy is woven into our social fabric [1] -- it is how we bond with each other as social creatures. Yet, the way this emotion manifests varies wildly, and teasing out the biological underpinnings for our empathy may prove incredibly challenging.  In 2006, Singer et al. published a study exploring the role and function of empathy in the brain. As a very simplistic summary, participants in the study watched two different games take place. In the first game, the player is fair, and is punished with an electric shock after. In the second game, the player cheats, and is punished with an electric shock thereafter. In short, in the latter case, the player seems “deserving” of the electric shock, as they did not play fairly.  In the case where a fair player received an electric shock, all participants showed brain activity in the regions of the anterior cingulate cortex, an area involved with empathy responses. An interesting discovery arose that divided participants among gendered lines, however, in the case where a cheating player is punished with an electric shock. Female participants showed markedly diminished activation in their anterior cingulate cortex, indicating a diminished, but still present empathy response. Male participants showed no anterior cingulate cortex activation. Most interestingly, while witnessing the shock of the cheating player, some male participants exhibited brain activity in the nucleus accumbens, a brain region associated with pleasure.  This study reveals gender differences that cannot be reduced to either biology or society. It’s possible that these brain responses are associated with socially conditioned behaviors; it’s also possible that these responses are biologically innate [2]. Moreover, the study only provides us one slice of behavior. That is to say, it’s totally possible that female participants would display less empathy similarly if a cheating player is punished by non-physical means. The vague nature of the differences observed in the experiment can be frustrating; likewise, the temptation to label the phenomenon one way or the other is great. The beauty of the experiment is solely that it allows us to further question our own intuitions, and in the process, get to learn more about ourselves and our species.

인류가 오래전부터 고민해온 질문 중에 ‘타고난 것인가, 양육에 의한 것인가?’라는 것이 있습니다. 이에 대해 좋은 답을 내는 것은 무척 어렵고, 불가능할 수도 있습니다. 사회화와 생물학은 아주 복잡한 방식으로 작용하면서 우리가 세상을 이해하고 해석하는 기반을 만들어내기 때문입니다.   공감, 즉 타인의 고통, 슬픔, 기쁨을 공유하는 능력에 대해 설명해 보는 것이 좋은 예가 될 수 있습니다. 공감이란 것은 우리의 사회적인 상호작용에 깊이 엮여 있어서, 우리가 사회적 동물로서 서로 유대감을 형성하는 방법이 됩니다. 하지만 이 감정은 매우 다양한 양상으로 표출되고, 이 능력의 생물학적 기반을 따로 떼어서 생각해 보는 것은 몹시 어려운 일입니다. 2006년 싱어 박사팀은 ‘두뇌에서 공감이 수행하는 역할과 기능’에 대한 연구를 발표했습니다. 아주 간단히 요약하자면, 이 연구의 참가자들은 두 개의 다른 게임을 관찰하게 됩니다. 첫 번째 게임에서,  게임에 참여한 선수는 공정하게 게임에 임했지만 게임 후 전기 충격 처벌을 받습니다. 두 번째 게임에서, 선수는 부정행위를 하고 전기 충격 처벌을 받습니다. 즉, 두 번째 게임에서는 선수가 부정행위를 했기 때문에 전기 충격을 "받아 마땅한” 것으로 볼 수 있습니다.  공정하게 임한 선수가 전기 충격 처벌을 받은 경우, 연구에 참가한 모든 이들에게서 공감 반응에 관여하는 ‘전대상피질’ 영역이 활성화되었습니다. 그런데 부정행위자가 전기 충격 처벌을 받는 경우에는 참가자들이 성별에 따라 다른 반응을 보이는 흥미로운 결과가 나왔습니다. 여성 참가자의 전대상피질 활성도는 현저하게 감소했는데, 이것은 그 정도가 감소하긴 했어도 여전히 공감 반응을 보였다는 뜻입니다. 그러나 남성 참가자의 전대상피질 활성화는 전혀 일어나지  않았습니다. 더 흥미롭게도, 부정행위자가 전기 충격 처벌을 받는 것을 목격한 일부 남성 참가자들에서 즐거움과 관련된 뇌의 영역인 측백핵이 활성화되었습니다.  이 연구는 생물학이나 사회화 어느 쪽으로도 설명하기 어려운 성별 간 차이를 보여줍니다. 이러한 뇌 반응은 사회화로 조건화된 행동과 연관되어 있을 수도 있고, 혹은 생물학적으로 타고난 것일 수도 있습니다. 그리고 이 연구는 우리 행동의 한 조각만을 보여줄 뿐입니다. 다시 말해 부정행위자가 비 신체적인 처벌을 받으면 여성 참가자들의 공감 정도도 비슷하게 줄어들 가능성이 매우 큽니다. 이 실험에서 관찰된 차이가 명확히 설명되지 않는 것이 실망스러울 수 있습니다. 이와 비슷하게, 어떤 현상에 대해 이것은 이런 것이고, 저것은 저런 것이라고 라벨을 붙이고 싶은 유혹도 클 것입니다. 앞서 언급한 실험의 진가는 우리의 이런 본능을 점검해 볼 수 있게 하는 데 있습니다. 그러는 중에 우리는 우리 자신에 대해, 또 인간에 대해 좀 더 배울 수 있으니까요.
