“That’s not fair,” screams the children in the pre-school, after discovering that some students received more candies in flavors that they liked, while others received less. It’s only natural, though, that in a bag of randomly distributed [1] candies some students would receive more of their desired flavors, and others would receive less. What’s even more natural, however, is the students’ reactions to injustice. As early as 15 months of age, human infants possess a basic sense of fairness. Very early on, we develop frameworks that allow us to function in a shared social context with other human beings. These notions of fairness are not unique to us, in fact, but are shared by some of our close ancestors. A study in fairness conducted in chimpanzees involved giving them a task (to return a stone), and rewarding them with either cucumber (less desirable) or grape (more desirable). Once chimpanzees noticed their peers were getting paid “more” to do the same work, they became angry, sometimes irrationally throwing the cucumber back at the researcher. Moreover, in a few cases, chimpanzees offered the grape (and noticing that their peer was not receiving a grape) would refuse the “unfair” payment.  Similar observations can be made when we explore human infants and their intuitions on fairness. A study conducted in 15-month-old infants makes for some interesting revelations. The infants watched as a representative distributed four graham crackers to two recipients. On occasion, one recipient would receive three crackers while the other received one, while other times each recipient would receive two crackers each. In the cases of equal distribution, the infants were not surprised, but they were in the cases of unequal distribution. Furthermore, studies indicated that the infants actually came to prefer individuals who distributed the crackers equally. Studies on infants and on chimpanzees exploring fairness don’t manage to provide much context about how we as humans should approach fairness. Traditionally, however, some psychologists have posited [2] that it’s our notions of fairness that makes us uniquely human, when in fact, this doesn’t seem the case. These studies reveal interesting trends about the innateness of some of our principles. And, they might encourage us to take a moment to reflect: in a world rife with inequality, how far have we strayed from our furry counterparts?
