Opioids are a class of narcotic drugs that include prescription medications and the currently illegal drug heroin. This class of drugs act on opioid receptors in not just the brain (which in and of itself triggers significant pleasure and reward responses) but opioid receptors all over the body, in the stomach, the spinal cord, and beyond. In doing so, opioids reduce pain not by increasing your pain threshold, but rather by masking it with feelings of intense euphoria, with a complete sense of calmness that may also have antianxiety and antidepressant effects. In the US, prescription opioids have been used to treat acute [1] pain, mainly the kinds of pain that don’t respond as well to traditional pain-relievers or over-the-counter drugs. However, their mechanism of action can mostly explain their potential for addictiveness. This, combined with the rate of prescription (about 47 per every 100 eligible people in the US) help to explain why opioid abuse is currently an epidemic in the US. A recent study cited by the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) indicates that the total economic burden associated with the misuse of opioids runs the United States about 79 billion dollars a year. In 2017, this number reached the highest in recorded history. In the state of New York alone, some three million dollars in opioid payments were made to physicians in the same year.  These economic measures may not meaningfully give context to the number of human lives lost. Between the years 1999 to 2017, some 218,000 people in the US died from opioid-related overdoses. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has only resulted in spikes in these numbers, as depression and suicidal ideation increase, especially in younger populations.  The role of pharmaceutical companies in the epidemic is indeed complex, but the fact that some liability exists is clear. Research showed a strong correlation between the number of opioids prescribed and the amount paid out from pharmaceutical companies to doctors. Marketing tactics and intense lobbying by companies like Purdue Pharma have resulted in litigation, but most take the form of settlements, with no admission of guilt. Even million dollar settlements make imperceptibly [2] tiny dents in the 13 billion dollar opioid industry.  Nowadays, there seems to be less and less that money cannot buy. In the United States, the industry of sadness, or more accurately, that of pain, has become one of profit; but inducing euphoria comes at a hefty cost.
