Have you ever wondered how manufacturers know if their products are safe for humans? One method used for such determination is that of the Draize Eye test. Named after John H. Draize (a toxicologist in the 20th century), this test was developed to test yet-to-be-released cosmetic and other personal care products for their potential risks. The test is administered by applying small amounts of the product on a test subject’s skin or inside their eye. The test subject is then observed for any signs of irritation or pain. The catch? Animals, such as rabbits or mice, are frequently used as the test subjects.  Animal testing is not a novel idea. This practice dates back to the time of early Greek physician-scientists. Medical giants such as Aristotle and Galen performed experiments on animals to gain a better understanding of anatomical and pathological mechanisms. However, it was a catastrophic incident that made such testing popular in modern times: the Elixir crisis in the 1930s. In 1937, an American pharmaceutical company created a solution named “Elixir Sulfanilamide” that neither the chief pharmacist nor the company chemists were aware were toxic to humans. Shipped across the country without proper testing, the Elixir caused mass poisoning and killed over 100 people. Public outrage led to the passing of the 1938 Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, requiring drug testing on animals before a product can be released on the market. Nonetheless, critics of this practice, including animal rights advocates, argue that the benefits for humans do not outweigh the detrimental harm placed on animals. Some 26 million animals — such as dogs, cats, monkeys, mice, and rats to name a few — are routinely treated inhumanely and endure pain during these experiments. Many are infected with diseases and forced to be sick with chemicals, while others are water-deprived. In the worst cases, the animal is killed. Moreover, some of the experiments are poorly designed, which wastes the lives of animal subjects that suffer in the process. A study in the US and UK found that sometimes issues with control groups and poor data reporting can cause only 59% of all collected data to be viable. However, without testing on animals, it would be very difficult to advance contemporary medicine, especially because few humans would want to be test subjects for products that have potential risks. Many of the modern-day medical treatments and medicines would not exist without animal testing. Some include the polio vaccines and treatments for HIV and AIDs. More importantly, what are the alternatives to animal testing? What other existing methods could determine product safety before harm is done to people. As illustrated above, the Elixir incident might have been preventable had any thorough testing been conducted. Unfortunately, animal testing seems to be the most effective solution as of now. Only testing on a living, whole-body system can give credible results; methods such as growing cell cultures on Petri dishes don’t reflect the complexity of organisms. Moreover, the effect a substance has on animals tends to closely mirror the human reaction that would be elicited [1] from exposure to the same substance.  These questions are not completely resolved while the European Union (EU), Israel, and India already banned the sale of any cosmetic products that were tested on animals, in hopes of discouraging global vendors from trading animal-tested products. There are currently no bans on animal testing in the United States. However, many consumers have become more aware of the issues with animal testing, encouraging companies to take a cruelty-free approach. Ethical concerns may justifiably dissuade [2] consumers from buying animal-tested items, but a total ban on animal testing remains controversial.

여러분은 제조업체가 자기들의 제품이 인간에게 안전한지 여부를 어떻게 알 수 있는지 생각해본 적이 있으신가요? 그걸 결정하는 데 사용되는 방법 중 하나가 드레이즈 아이 테스트입니다. 20세기 독극물학자 존 드레이즈 박사의 이름을 딴 이 테스트는 아직 출시되지 않은 화장품이나 기타 개인 위생용품들에 대한 위험성 여부를 테스트하기 위해 개발되었습니다. 이 테스트는 소량의 제품을 실험대상의 피부나 눈 안에 발라 보는 방법으로 시행됩니다. 그런 다음 실험대상에 어떤 부작용이나 고통이 있는가 그 반응을 관찰합니다. 문제는? 토끼나 쥐 같은 동물이 이 실험대상으로 자주 사용된다는 것입니다.  동물 실험은 전혀 새로운 것이 아닙니다. 이런 관행은 초기 그리스 시대의 의학자들에게까지 거슬러 올라갑니다. 아리스토텔레스나 갈레노스 같은 의학계의 거장들은 인체의 해부학적, 병리학적 체제를 보다 잘 이해하기 위해서 동물을 대상으로 실험을 했습니다. 하지만 현대에 와서 이런 동물 실험이 보편화된 것은 바로 비극적인 사건 때문입니다. 그건 바로 1930년대의 엘릭시어 사건입니다.  1937년 미국의 한 제약회사는 엘릭시어 설파닐라미데라는 화학물을 만들었는데 회사의 최고 제약사도, 다른 화학자들도 그것이 인간에게 독이 된다는 것을 몰랐습니다. 제대로 실험을 하지 않은 상태로 그 약품은 미국 전역으로 보급되었고 엘릭시어는 대규모 독극물 중독 사태를 일으켜 100명이 넘는 사람이 목숨을 잃었습니다. 국민들의 분노는 1938년 연방 정부가 “음식 약물 화장품 법안”을 통과하게 만들었고 이 법안은 어떤 제품이 출시되기 전에 반드시 동물 실험을 거쳐야 한다는 내용입니다.  하지만 동물 권리 보호자를 포함해서 이런 관행을 비판하는 사람들은 이 실험으로 인해 얻는 인간의 혜택은 동물에게 미치는 파괴적인 해악을 정당화할 수 없다고 주장합니다. 2천 6백만 마리의 동물들 - 개, 고양이, 원숭이, 생쥐, 쥐 등을 포함한 여러 종류의 수많은 동물들이 이런 실험의 대상이 되어 잔인하게 다루어지고 고통을 받습니다. 많은 동물들은 병균에 전염되고 몸에 투여된 화학물들 때문에 강제로 병을 앓아야 할 뿐 아니라 물을 못 먹고 견뎌야 하는 경우도 있습니다. 최악의 경우 동물들은 죽음을 당하기도 합니다.  이뿐만 아니라 어떤 실험들은 형편없이 디자인되어서 대상이 된 동물들이 과정중에 고통을 겪다가 죽고 맙니다. 미국과 영국의 한 연구에 따르면 통제 집단이나 데이타 보고 과정에 문제로 인해서 수집된 데이터 중에 실제로 유용한 것은 겨우 59퍼센트 정도에 그친다고 합니다.  그러나 동물을 대상으로 하는 실험 없이는 현대 의학의 발전을 기대하기는 어려울 것입니다. 특히 잠재적으로 위험성이 있는 제품의 실험 대상이 되고자 하는 인간은 거의 없기 때문입니다. 현대의 많은 치료법과 약품들은 동물 대상 실험이 없었다면 존재하지 못했을 겁니다. 소아마비 백신과 HIV, AIDs 치료법 등이 여기에 포함됩니다.  그렇다면 무엇이 동물 실험을 대체할 수 있을까요? 제품이 인간에게 해를 끼치기 전에 그것의 안전성을 시험해볼 수 있는 다른 방법이 있을까요? 위에서 보았듯이 엘릭시어 사건은 철저한 실험을 거쳤다면 피할 수 있었을 겁니다. 불행히도 현재로서는 동물 실험이 가장 효과적인 해결책인 듯합니다. 살아 있는 온전한 몸을 가진 대상에 실험을 해야 신뢰할 만한 결과를 기대할 수 있기 때문입니다. 페트리 접시에 세포를 배양하는 것과 같은 방법은 유기체의 복잡성을 잘 반영하지 못합니다. 뿐만 아니라 어떤 물질이 동물에 미치는 영향은 인간이 그 물질에 노출되었을 때 일으킬 수 있는 반응과 가장 근사합니다.  <span style="12pt; Nanum Myeongjo", serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">세계 시장에서 동물 실험을 거친 제품의 거래를 억제하고자 하는 희망에서 유럽연합, 이스라엘, 인도가 이미 동물에게 실험한 화장품의 판매를 금지하기는 했지만 이런 문제가 완전히 해결된 것은 아닙니다. 현재 미국에서는 동물 실험이 금지되어 있지 않습니다. 하지만 동물 실험에 관련된 문제에 대한 인식이 높아짐에 따라 많은 소비자들은 회사들이 잔인하지 않은 접근법을 취하도록 요구하고 있습니다. 윤리성을 우려해서 소비자들이 동물 실험을 거친 제품을 사지 말도록 설득하는 것은 정당화될 수 있지만 동물 실험을 전적으로 금지하는 것은 아직도 논란의 소지가 많은 문제입니다.<span style="12pt; Nanum Myeongjo", serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">
