For eons, marriage has been a way to carry on the family bloodline. Now, it stands in a gray area [1], its existence reluctantly placed somewhere between a dreadful convention and a noble venture. Many people do not second-guess the necessity of marriage, while others express stronger opinions on the subject. Overall, the institution of marriage has often been at the center of many fiery debates.  While opinions on marriage are shifting across culture, in the southern half of the Korean peninsula, a unique development can be observed. "Marriage and family life are becoming expensive propositions in South Korea and are increasingly only available to the highly educated and wealthy," noted Hyunjoon Park, Korea Foundation Professor of Sociology. Supporting this observation, the marriage rates in South Korea are declining.  Park’s diagnosis captures a widespread sentiment. Sampo (the giving up of ‘three’) is Korean slang that refers to the mentality of forgoing three things: dating, marriage, and children. Precarious economic conditions and the overwork culture are often singled out as the driving force behind sampo; marriage is becoming a less feasible option for many.   However, sampo is only part of the bigger picture. Park and James Raymo from Princeton University point out that marriage among highly educated women and low-educated men is happening less and at later ages. This pattern, according to Park, should be understood with the fact that “gender-based division of labor within marriage remains strong within [South Korea].” In other words, research suggests that compared to some other countries, expectations on women to stay at home with children are stronger in South Korea.  When it is more acceptable for the man to be the primary breadwinner, the “wise” choice for women would be to find a suitor with equal or greater education levels. In a country where more and more women are entering higher education, it becomes increasingly difficult to fulfill this mission.  The sampo sentiment, educational composition, and traditional expectations combined, fewer South Koreans are tying the knot or are doing so later than ever.  Changes in the South Korean marriage market are accelerating another unique cultural phenomenon: matchmaking.
