IntroductionCostco, an American multinational corporation of retailers was founded in 1976. Since then, it has steadily acquired quite the cult following, with a unique membership-restricted structure; that is to say, only Costco members may shop and purchase items at their stores. As of October 2018, its market capitalization was valued at over ninety billion US dollars, and its revenue continues to grow year by year. What exactly is it that makes Costco so successful? The answer is actually quite complex, so let’s instead take a layman [1]’s look at what Costco is known for: rotisserie chicken, hotdogs, and samples.  Retail TreatsSamples, in case you’re unfamiliar with the term, are samples of (usually) food items provided free of charge at grocery stores. Prior to the pandemic, Costcos across the globe were known for their plethora of samples offered, especially over weekends. These allowed customers to try before they buy, as well as providing a pleasant shopping experience.  You might be wondering, then, what’s so unique about Costco’s rotisserie chicken ​​— an item that’s carried fairly commonly in grocery stores across the US. Well, to start, the price has not changed from the $4.99 since 2009 and likely won’t in the near future. The chickens weigh at least three pounds cooked, and Costco sells over a hundred million chickens in a year.  Like the chicken, Costco’s hotdog (or more precisely, the hotdog soda combo) has been $1.50 since 1985-- and it was an amazing deal at that time. Now, factoring in inflation, Costco’s hotdog, much like its chicken, are loss leaders.  In retail, a loss leader is an item that is sold at a price that isn’t profitable in order to bring in customers. Chances are, those folks visiting Costco aren’t just there to buy a hotdog and drink, and for the amount lost per hotdog sale, Costco stands to gain [2] many more in sales.  Costco stores across the world rake in [3] significant amounts of profit; as an example, Costco Korea in the 2010 fiscal year amounted to about 1.58 trillion won, and reached 4.5 trillion in the 2020 fiscal year. Interestingly, the Costco store that generates the highest single store sales globally is located in Seoul, Korea. Costco has established itself as something so unique, in fact, that one high school senior wrote her college essay about it, gaining her admission to five Ivy League schools and Stanford. In many ways, Costco has succeeded not just as a business, but as a cultural experience as well. In that way, it will truly endure in hearts and minds across the world.
