Apple is notorious for implementing a ploy called “planned obsolescence,” meaning their electronic devices are set to stop working after a fixed amount of time post-purchase and consumers have to reinvest in new products. 

My mom’s ploy for getting me to clean my room is by bribing me with ice cream! 

Many companies try to entice consumers by offering sales or discounts. 

The idea of potentially ending COVID-19 has enticed many Americans to get vaccinated.

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “superfood” as, “a food that is rich in compounds considered beneficial to a person’s health.” We hear this term a lot, and it’s frequently thrown around in the US-- the benefits of superfoods can be found all over health magazines and in food advertisements. But who decides what items are deemed superfoods, and how do they actually compare to “regular” food?  In a society fixated on health trends, superfoods offer an intriguing intersection of health, nutrition, and marketing, illustrating a prime example of how market-led tactics can curate an illusionary sense of trust within the consumer community.What are superfoods? The word “superfood” first appeared towards the beginning of the 20th century as an attempt to market bananas. Due to their versatility, affordability, and easily digestible nutrients, bananas skyrocketed in popularity with scientists quickly producing scholarship to back the “super” health benefits of this fruit. While coining the expression “superfood” merely started as a way to promote the nutritional assets of bananas, the word became a commonly used terminology for a plethora of different foods by the start of the 21st century.A few examples of widely recognized superfoods today are blueberries, avocados, quinoa, kale, and almonds, to name just a few. While there’s no debating that these foods are densely filled with vitamins and minerals, not everyone believes that superfoods deserve to be placed on a glamorized pedestal in the food industry.The Rise of SuperfoodsBetween 2011 and 2015, the number of food products being advertised with “superfood” ingredients increased by 200%. The superfood “industry” is now worth over a billion dollars. Per recent studies, consumers are willing to pay more for food perceived as healthy. This means that foods claiming to be “super” play into a large and rapidly expanding industry obsessed with health fads [1]. A large contributor to the growing market interest in superfoods is celebrity endorsement. Gwyneth Paltrow is an outspoken supporter of integrating superfoods into our diets, and she has expressed pro-superfood sentiments in her cookbooks. Jennifer Aniston, Victoria Beckham, and Madonna are also noteworthy proponents of superfoods. Superfood Labeling: A ControversyWhile science agrees that superfoods tend to be nutrient-dense options, there is not much scholarship to prove that certain fruits, vegetables, and grains are “superior” to others. Therefore, some people view superfoods as more of a corporate marketing ploy [2] to entice [3] consumers. The sneaky part behind this marketing scheme is that while “superfood” seems like an official title, there’s actually no FDA regulation on superfood requirements. In other words, labeling a product with the title of “superfood” is about as subjective as labeling it “yummy,” except that “superfood” influences consumers’ perception of a food’s quality and health benefits.Worth the Hype?Superfoods offer an eye-catching promise of better health. While typically nutrient-dense options, they send an incorrect message to consumers that a singular item can make them healthy. The reality is that variety and moderation are always as important when working towards a better diet. It’s also critical to recognize that the label “superfood” is not FDA-supported, meaning it was curated by the market —  for the market. Before investing in the latest market-led health fad, we should ask ourselves: how much truth is behind the concept of “superfoods?”
