Caffeine is the most commonly consumed psychoactive [1] substance on the planet. Known for its energizing effects, caffeine stimulates both the mind and body, improving athletic performance and reducing drowsiness while suppressing appetite. Unlike most other drugs, caffeine generates logical and organized thinking, even seriousness. It is also a key feature of modern social life, especially in the workplace and education. It shows up everywhere, from coffee meetings to cocktails.  Because of its practical and addictive nature, 90% of Americans ingest caffeine daily in tea, soda, or coffee. Koreans are no slackers in this department either, with an average of 512 cups of coffee consumed per year. Caffeine occurs naturally in various plants, from the ubiquitous [2] coffee ‘bean’ (actually a seed) and tea leaves to less widely known sources like Africa’s kola nut (which gave both its name and caffeine to Coca-Cola). The drug has long played a role in many cultures as fuel for celebration, religious ritual, and intellectual activity. The ancient Chinese medical text Shi Lun (食论) points out that drinking tea “constantly makes one think better.” Native Americans grew and traded yaupon, the only plant in North America containing caffeine, which was brewed and drunk to enhance celebrations and keep parties going through the night. Coffee became popular in the Islamic world as early as the 14th century after being adopted by intellectuals and religious adherents seeking to work and worship late into the night. While it was not until the 17th century that caffeine (in the form of coffee) became popular in Europe, it quickly hooked and inspired geniuses from Isaac Newton to J.S. Bach. Some historians have even argued that coffee—and its caffeine buzz—stimulated the Age of Enlightenment and Scientific Revolution that occurred in Europe around the time of its arrival. Aside from what caffeine can do for the mind, how does it affect the body? While generally recognized as safe, too much caffeine can bring around side effects, including nervousness, anxiety, the jitters [3], or trouble sleeping. Caffeine also has a long quarter-life, decreasing by merely 25% over 12 hours. That means 75% of your afternoon coffee is in your body at midnight. This can cause problems entering “deep sleep” and lead to long-term sleep deprivation, even in people who get eight hours in bed each night. Caffeine’s benefits also quickly wear off, despite it lasting in your body for days.  From this perspective, a morning cup of coffee or tea is simply delaying withdrawal, making up for the bad night of sleep it caused yesterday and keeping us hooked.However, caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee also have some proven health benefits in moderation, including reducing the chance of some cancers, diabetes, dementia, and potentially even reducing depression.  It is also hard to imagine what the world would look like without coffee shops, tea ceremonies, or Coca-Cola. What role does caffeine play in your culture and personal life?
