Fiat currency is inherently vulnerable to inflation [2]. Hyperinflation, usually characterized by an inflation rate that exceeds 50% within a month—is a catastrophic event where a currency loses its value rapidly in the space of hours. Unlike inflation, it almost becomes impossible to stop through policy as citizens scramble to get rid of any paper currency as quickly as possible. The specter [3] of hyperinflation lays the foundation of any poorly managed economy facing recession. Indeed, this phenomenon is not some rarity that has seldom happened in the past; it is a chaotic economic force that has destroyed economies in over 50 instances in the past century. Recent cases of hyperinflation include Hungary, Zimbabwe, and Venezuela. From 2007 to 2008 in Zimbabwe, prices doubled in the economy every 24.7 hours. In Venezuela, which attained an inflation rate of 69% in 2014, 181% in 2015, 800% in 2016, and 1,700,00% by 2018, the rate reached almost 57,000,000% by 2019 and continues to rise. Perhaps the most famous case of hyperinflation was Weimar Germany in 1923. This example is worth looking into as we can observe striking parallels between Germany’s economy at the time and modern-day economies in countries like the USA, UK, and South Korea. Following the defeat of Germany in the First World War, France was left in physical and financial ruin. Much of the war was fought on French soil, with German industries, agriculture, cities, and businesses barely affected. Germany, the defeated, was required to pay reparations—to pay for the damage—to the victor, France, as a result of the Treaty of Versailles. It is often thought that the sum of reparations had a devastating impact on the German economy, with the Weimar government needing to repay debts of over 130B Gold Marks. However, in reality, much of this debt was never intended to be repaid. Thus, repayments accounted for less than 3% of Weimar’s GDP. You may ask, therefore, what caused the Weimar currency to collapse. As France struggled to rebuild, Weimar Germany increasingly began to miss reparations payments. The French economy was failing, and France had chronic political instability. Therefore, in 1923 the French Army occupied the Ruhr, Germany's main industrial heartland. The idea was to take production from the mines and factories in the Ruhr as repayment for the debts. Germany responded to the occupation by furloughing [1] the entire Ruhr workforce, thus paying all workers to cease production. To finance this, Germany printed vast quantities of money, leading to hyperinflation. This is precisely the same effect that the global pandemic has had on many developed nations. As the pandemic hit, global production ground to a halt as productive capacity was decimated by the lack of labor. To respond to the crisis, the US has authorized an almost 2-trillion-dollar injection into the economy as part of the American Rescue Plan on top of the stimulus injections under President Trump. In the UK, any worker who was not considered essential was furloughed, with the government paying 80% of all non-essential workers’ wages to cease production and remain at home. This also included paying businesses for their lost revenue and providing billions of pounds in loans for companies to continue through the pandemic, much of which has been financed by excessive borrowing and the printing of money. As in Weimar Germany, the pattern is the same, a blow to productive capacity, followed by printing money to recover. Does this resemblance point to the possibility of post-pandemic hyperinflation?
